A massive 23 national titles were up for grabs during the Hyundai National Surfing Championships presented by Quiksilver. More than 350 competitors had made the migration to Piha to try and claim a title and have their name etched in the history books.

Open Men’s, Open Women’s and Longboarding Divisions plus a further 20 divisions comprising of age groups from Under 14 through to Over 50s through to Kneeboard and Bodyboard disciplines brought out the best of the best from around the country.

Seventeen-year-old surf sensation Matt Hewitt of Mount Maunganui survived the 8 day long duration to win the biggest event of his short competitive career after holding off his fellow competitors to win the Hyundai National Surfing Championships presented by Quiksilver Open Mens Division whilst. Christchurch surfing sensation Daisy Thomas clinched the victory in the Open Women’s.
