The Canterbury Scholastic Surfing Team has been given a much needed kick to their fundraising campaign thanks to ten times and defending Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Champion Kelly Slater.
The team have secured a limited edition Quiksilver t-shirt autographed by the
man himself. The shirt lists Slater’s 45
ASP event wins which span back to 1992.
The shirt is being auctioned via Trade Me with all proceeds going toward
the Canterbury Scholastic Surfing Team and their bid to get to the National
Scholastic Championships being held at Ahipara in the Far North during October.
The shirt was received by Maz Quinn while at the Quiksilver Pro held on the
Gold Coast in March. After hearing of
the Christchurch
earthquake Slater signed the shirt and gave it to Quinn for fundraising
purposes.
“The funds raised will be gratefully received with many families under
financial pressure due to the earthquake” said a thankful Canterbury Surf Team
Coach Aaron Lock who added that it will cost in excess of $20,000 for the team to
attend the event.
The surfers of Christchurch
have been land based for much of the year due to the pollution along the city
beaches as a result of broken sewer and storm water drainage systems. This has meant that the grommets need to travel
out of town every weekend or after school during the week if there is time, to
go surfing and train for the event.
The signed Slater t-shirt auction can be found here.
Spread the word far and wide and lets rally together in support of the
Canterbury Scholastic Surfing Team.
