Cape Classic Wrap and Results

An overcast and grey start to the day then the sun burnt through with a 2 – 3 ft. surf with varied conditions during the final day of the Cape Classic held at Westport over the weekend.  The tide dropped out and came back in as the judges and officials put in a second 11-hour day.

The finals started just after 3pm with the U16 boys.  Ruben Peyroux (Dun) took first with a heat score of 12.40 out of 20 over James Miller’s (Dun) 9.5 just ahead of Jacob Fitzgerald (WC) with a 9 followed by Ruben Lyons (Kaik) with a 6.7.

The Open Longboard was a very tight affair with two of New Zealand’s top riders leaving things until the last two minutes to drop their top scores. Recent NZ representative Hugh Ritchie (Chch) dropped two high 7s in the last four minutes of the heat to finish with a heat total of 15.17 to edge out William Wallace’s 13.5 ahead of Jon Blacktop’s 12.33 and Sam Sands’ (Chch) 9.17.

The Senior Men suffered from a lack of waves, however, the winner Rodney Somogyvari smashed everything he could get and finished with a heat total of 16. Craig Sherriff (Chch) and Neil Robb went neck and neck, with Sherriff taking the win with an 11.67 over Robb’s 11.5.

The Junior Women’s and Open Women’s was dominated by 16-year-old NZ rep Tegan Bishop.

The Junior Men’s was a stylish win to New Zealand rep Elliott Brown (Dun) with a score of 14, narrowly beating club mate James Murphy’s 13.67.

The Open Men’s was a real show of South Island talent with a transplanted South African to help international relations. Rodney Somogyvari, dominated the heat posting a 15.9 ahead of Elliott Brown’s 13.67, Ben Rees 11.33 and Levi O’Connor (Kaik) 10.37.

Huge thanks to all the sponsors, officials and competitors.  A great comp showcasing some of the South Islands finest surfers.
