The Kiwi's had one of their best performances at an Australaian Pro Junior event last weekend. The Chiko Pro girls division was taken out by Airini Mason over World Junior Champion Laura Enever. Airini was joined by personal best performances from Buck Woods and Alex Dive who placed fifth in the boys division.
From the ASP media release...
In the girls event, an interference call on world junior champion Laura Enever in the first five minutes of her final with Kiwi Arini Mason meant Enever was always going to find it difficult to take the trophy.
The North Narrabeen world champ seemed dispirited after the interference call, and it was pretty much a one-way street for Mason to be on top of the judges' sheets when siren sounded.
Enever was disappointed at herself for making such a rookie error in a Pro Junior final.
But she was humbly apologetic at the presentation and appeared genuinely sorry for dropping in when Mason had priority.
"I'm really sorry for dropping in, Arini," she said at the presentation.
"I didn't think she was going to go for it and so I just went. I don't know what I was thinking," Enever said.
But Mason didn't seem to mind one little bit.
"No worries, that's okay," Mason said with a smile.
And why wouldn't she be smiling?
The 20-year-old, whose hails from Gisborne on New Zealand's east coast, had just knocked over a recently crowned world champ and had totally out-surfed her in the final of an ASP Australasian Pro Junior - regardless of the interference call.
"I'd really like to thank my Dad for being here today. He hasn't been to many contests with me," the Bogangar (NSW) based Kiwi surfer said at the presentation.
Buck Woods also contacted us post event fired up on his result. He along with his mates are off to Tahiti this weekend to compete in the next Pro Junior event. You can follow that event live from the 15th of March here.
