Rain with light NNE winds & 2-4 ft swell greeted kids from over 17 schools from across the Auckland region for the 2010 Auckland Regional Scholastics. Using a repecharge format competitors had a chance to show their stuff, and they didn’t disappoint.
A great performance from all round water man Stefan Gross (St Kentigerns College) saw him take out both the U18s and the body board event. Head judge for the BB Floyd Smith (past U18 Australasian champ) was impressed with the “lid” skills demonstrated by Stefan and Port Waikato lads Zachariah Follet (2nd) and Ashley Kanji (3rd) (Tuakau College).Great Barrier boys, Abraham Kendall (correspondence) and Sid West (Raglan Surf Academy) finished 2nd and 3rd respectively with Subarn Linklater (Massey) coming in 4th in the U18 boys. Sid also claimed the prize for the highest wave score for the day (barrel on the Bar).
Typically the U16 was fiercely contested- with Elliot Paerata Reid, (Mind Alive) 1st,Tane Wallis (Henderson) 2nd & Taylor Louie (Green Bay) 3rd all showing off their local knowledge. Sam Haven (Kaipara College) fresh back from the warm waters of Indo was 4th.In a very tight contest his younger brother Blake Haven took out the U14, with Tom Mason (Takapuna College) 2nd and Sam Poulter (St Kentigerns College) 3rd.
The girls shivered but bravely donned their wetties and ended up getting some good surf. Rosa Thompson (Diocesan) took out the U18 girls surfing the “Hass”with Ruby Meade (Western Springs) 2nd. Rosa also tied with Sid to get the Highest Wave score of the day.
Winner of the U16 Maiya Thompson again showed her great fitness and water skills ( “I haven’t surfed for 21/2 months she shyly said) Hannah Kohn ( St Cuthbert’s ) was 2nd. The Sansom Sisters( Long Bay ) dominated the U14 girls, Gabi 1st, Bianca 2nd ,Hannah 3rd The Long Board event entertained ,with some big take offs on the Bar from the 3 boys fighting it out. Ooohs and aaahs hooted from the beach as both Blake and Sid wiped out on their first 2-3 take offs (short to long board transition obviously challenging!!) They finally sussed it mixing modern and traditional skills for the crowd .1st Sid( Raglan surf academy),2nd Blake Zuill( Kingsway) and Tanui Wano( Green Bay) throwing in head stands &,switches to finish 3rd.
Big thanks to our sponsors GLOBE, FREERIDE, QUIKSILVER, KIWISURF, LOST, all the volunteer judges, Duncan from Piha Surf Lifesaving ,Wildcoast Board Riders Club for their equipment and School Sports Coordinators for pulling together a great comp.
Team Selection announced August 20th
