Auckland Scholastic Tri Series Event Three – Maori Bay
Written by Craig Lloyd
Wednesday, 15 August 2012

Quality 2-3ft waves with a light offshore and lots of sunshine were on offer for competitors in the final event of the Auckland Regional Scholastics Surfing Tri-Series held at Maori Bay on Sunday 5th August.

With valuable series points and a number of team positions still up for grabs spectators
were treated to a display of high performance surfing as competitors fought it out in their last chance to impress the selection panel.

The battle for dominance in the Girls divisions continued with local girls Milly Crewe
(Kaipara College) and Britt Kindred (Kristin School) locked together at the top of the leader board in the U14’s and North Shore sister act Bianca and Gaby Sansom (Long Bay College)both looking to finish with a win in the U16’s. All the girls lived up to their reputations and it looks as though the Auckland girls will be a force to be reckoned with at the National Scholastics Finals in Taranaki in October.

With one win each in the Under 14 Boys division S.W. Van Der Merwe (Orewa College) and
Harry Macintosh (Waiheke High) continued their rivalry through the series and with both of them in great form it came down to a countback to decide who got the guaranteed spot in the team.

With series leader Ware Wano (Green Bay High) unavailable for this comp the U18 Boys

put on a show to give the selectors some serious thinking to do and in the final and most spectacular heat of the day U16 Boys New Zealand Junior team member Elliott Paerata-Reid (Mind Alive) took the series out with an outstanding display of progressive and functional surfing.

Thanks to the judges, volunteers, parents, teachers, Maori Bay Boardriders, and especially
Philippa and Peter Haven, who all helped bring the series to an end in style. Team selection is now underway and all those chosen to represent Auckland will be notified ASAP.
