The first comp for the 2008 SISA Circuit is done and dusted. For the second year in a row “The Bayhouse Cape Classic” was held in challenging conditions at T- Bay. Saturday saw the early heats of cadets and women’s run in average three-foot onshore surf.
Young Dunedin surfer Jordan Durst showed he was capable of surfing waves with grunt as he advanced to the semis in the Cadets. Local and Raglan Surf Academy student Anna Hawes also advanced in the Junior Women’s winning all her heats. Surfers and spectators began to understand the term “four seasons in one day” as the rain and sun traded places every hour.
Conditions in the water took a turn for the worse by the early afternoon and many competitors were undone by the inconsistent waves, even though the swell had jumped to four to five foot.
An early exit from the “The Bayhouse” Open division was last year’s winner, Hayden Brain. Hayden couldn’t buy a wave during his quarterfinal heat and was sent packing.
Sunday morning saw much of the same conditions as the previous day. Kaikoura charger Aaron Surgenor became a no show after making the Masters and Longboard semis, rumour had it that he travelled home to Kaik’s but was going to return, perhaps luckily for some he didn’t.
As the finals began the sun appeared, but the strong onshore remained pushing the swell up and making the jump off or paddle out tricky for some.
Jordan Durst continued his dominance in the Cadets winning with a five-point margin. Anna Hawes never looked threatened in the Junior Women’s.
Hayley Coakes from Dunedin, took out the Women’s division showing plenty of style linking moves into the inside banks.
Dunno’s big wave rider Shayne Baxter, played with the waves during both his Longboard and Senior final. Shayne was successful in the Longboard but Anthony Hema’s local knowledge proved the difference in the Seniors.
The old fella’s hit the water with the Masters and Grand Masters, wave selection became very important as the tide pushed in. Tony Schafer who was in the blood bin earlier showed why he is still one of the best taking out the Masters. Geoff Mitchell scored a screamer to the beach early in the Grand Masters final and once he secured a backup it was all over.
Christchurch board riding club North Wai dominated the Junior division by having three of the four finalists. Ike Hanson from North Wai show great skill and talent in the sizey conditions, laying down some good turns to take out the Juniors from his fellow club members.
“The Bayhouse Open” final really belonged to one person, local charger Anthony Hema. Winning by seven points from Josh Rees, Sam Dunfoy and Ben Rees, Hema caught the better peaks coming through, showing not only local knowledge helped but surfing with a style that would have been exciting to watch in better surf conditions.
