The Canterbury Scholastic Surf Champs were held in great waves at Waikuku Beach on Sunday 19 May.

Tiny waves greeted competitors at New Brighton beach on Sunday morning so the contest was moved north to Waikuku in search of bigger waves. Conditions were great throughout the day with 1.5m waves peeling left and right under mainly sunny skies and cross offshore winds.

Neko Tohiariki (St Bedes) won the U18 boys with the highest scoring heat total of the event,  scoring a 6.5 for his opening wave and then finishing off with an excellent 8.5 pt ride. Myka Black (Shirley) won the U16 Boys with two great powerful turns. Estella Hungerford (Haeata)  won the U18/U16 Girls final with some powerful turns on some good left handers. Ava Henderson (Avonside) was the convincing winner in the U14 Girls. Jack McKenzie (Christs) was the unanimous winner in the U14 Boys. James Millar (St Bedes) won the Longboarding with some solid surfing to beat favourite Caspar McCormick in a tight final.

This event is the trial for the Canterbury Scholastic Surf Team, a training squad will be announced before the 10th June in preparation for the National Scholastic Surf Champs in Gisborne in October.

Special thanks to all the volunteers, parents and also Exit Surf for their support.

It was also announced on Monday that Estella Hungerford and Ava Henderson have been selected for the New Zealand Junior Surf Team to compete at the ISA World Junior Champs later this year.
