Career Best ASP World Tour Placing For Quinn |

Gisborne surfer Jay Quinn has continued the fantastic roll of excellent results for Kiwi surfers placing second at a major international event in Scotland overnight (Monday 18th February).
Quinn placed second at the O’Neill Cold Water Classic event held at Thurso East, Scotland,
the first leg of which was held at his home town of Gisborne in late March.
The result has elevated him 21 places to 75th on the Association of Surfing
Professionals (ASP) World Tour ratings.
“It is a great result. I am looking at jumping into the 70's on the ratings right now which will be my highest
ever” said Quinn early this morning before official ratings were released.
Quinn was defeated by first time event winner, Australian Brent Dorrington 9.00
points v 7.66 points in a low scoring final.
“I am not happy with second place right now but I am also not unhappy” said
Quinn. It has been an amazing week. I love coming to Scotland, the conditions have been
amazing” he added. Quinn placed ninth at
the event in 2010.
He found himself in a perfect position to take the lead in the final with six
minutes remaining. However, after
paddling over two good set waves, the third wave broke a little further out
catching him off guard as he took off.
“With around six minutes that proved to be crucial. The heat winner went
begging” said Quinn.
Quinn was one half of a marvellously hatched plan to make the event a one-two
Kiwi double as fellow travelling companion Richard Christie (Mah) rampaged
through the other side of the draw.
However Christie came up against Dorrington in the semifinal, the
Australian scoring 18.50 out of a possible 20 points in their match up – the
highest of the event dashing the New Zealander’s ambitious aspirations.
“Yeah, that was the plan” said Quinn of the potential for meeting Christie in
the final. “Kiwi 1-2, you can't help but notice two Kiwis in the last four
surfers of the event though… not all good plans come to fruition.”
Along with crucial rating points, Quinn was given ownership to land in the
northern reaches of Scotland,
a practice that allows him to hold the title of Lord Jay Quinn.
Christie by way of his third placing moves up six places to 52nd with
Billy Stairmand (Rag) leading the New Zealand surfers in 48th
after placing 37th at the event this week.
The three surfers will briefly return to New
Zealand before the Nike Lowers Pro event held in California from the 3rd
May.
