Christophers too Good
Written by Murray Weir
Tuesday, 23 October 2012
Hamish Christophers was too good for his fellow competitors in the 2012 Opunake Surf Inn Kneelo Surfing Classic held in challenging conditions at Opunake’s Middleton’s Bay over Labour Weekend.

Christophers, the reigning Pro Junior World Champion, surfed with power and flow throughout the event and looked the odds on favourite to take out the final. In the Men’s Open final, Christophers was up against Venezuelan surfer Armando Colucci, and Taranaki kneelos Jamie Andrews and Jason Farqhar.

Christophers headed to the left hand point with Farqhar, whilst the others chose to sit on the beach break in front of the judging tent. Christophers locked in a good scoring wave at the start of the final, and was able to back that up with his best wave, towards the end of the heat. Showing all his contest experience and knowledge, Christophers powered into his turns and was able to generate the speed needed to pull off his manoeuvres. Colucci, fresh from a surf contest in Spain, showed plenty of skill, linking turns and re-entries on the short punchy beach break, to stay in touch.  The Venezuelan took out second place from Jamie Andrews of Waitara on his last wave, enabling him to show the crowd how good a surfer he is. Andrews and Farqhar surfed with plenty of determination, but were starved of waves that offered any high scoring potential.

In the other finals Rebecca Heemi returned home from uni study to take out the women’s event from Eli Stevens, Jo Moore and Emma Croton all of New Plymouth.

The Under 18’s National Scholastic Champ Maukino Skelton took out the final, showing in years to come, he will be a surfer to contend with. His wave selection and manoeuvres gave him the edge over new kneelos Locky Stevens, (NP) Johnathan Tahau (Opunake) and Eli Stevens (NP). (Full results below)

Organisers, Kneeboard Surfing New Zealand would like to thank all competitors especially Colucci and Giovani Benitez from Venezuela, and surfers from Kaikoura, Auckland, Whangarei, and Mount Manganui. KSNZ also acknowledges the support and assistance of judges and the following supporters and sponsors of the 2012 Opunake Surf Inn Kneelo Surfing Classic.
