The New Zealand Maori Team are still going strong in the Coca Cola Ocenaia Cup being held in Tahiti this week. Chris Malone and Batchelor Tipene are leading the charge for the open men's division - both still alive in the qualifying rounds (semifinals). Motu Mataa is also alive in the repercharge rounds of the event. The twelve strong team - the biggest ever sent to the event left for Tahiti last Friday. The open men are accompanied by several junior surfers as well as Sophia Moore and Thandi Durahm in the women's division and Isaac Johnston in the longboards.
Sophia Moore and Thandi Durham face off in the repercharge semifinal with the top two placed surfers in that heat progressing through to the final of the women's division.
In the juniors we have the youngest of the team Peri Matenga who has stormed into the qualifying final along with Gisborne's Jay Paddock a second time representative at the event. The two surfers now have options up their sleeves. Attack their semifinal and move straight to the final or the long road. If they lose they will have to go into the sudden death repercharge rounds. Haami Martin and James Tume both remain alive in the repercharge rounds and will be hoping that Peri and Jay move through the qualifying rounds so they avoid potential elimination from their team mates.
Isaac Johnston has secured a second and a fifth in the lonboard division and has one more round to secure some more points for the New Zealand team.
