The Corona Super 16 is a two day event and includes the Inter Club Championship and the North vs South Challenge. A brief description of the Corona Super 16 format is as follows:
- Male surfers rated 1-12 on the Corona Crown Series after the final event qualify directly into the Super 16
- Male surfers rated 13-26 qualify for the Corona Super 16 trials
- The top two South Island surfers qualify for the trials
- The four finalists in the trials qualify for the main event
- Female surfers rated 1-3 on the Corona Crown Series after the final event qualify directly into the Super 16
- Female surfers rated 4-6 qualify for the Corona Super 16 trials
- The top female surfer in the South Island qualifies for the trials
- The winner of the trials qualifies for the main event
- The North vs South tag teams will comprise five surfers – three open men, one under 20 male and one open women
- The Inter Club Challenge will comprise eight teams from around the country (subject to change)
- Each team will comprise of five surfers – three open men, one under 20 male and one open women
- The prize money across the two tag team events will be $5000
Tag team events involve five surfers in each team. Four teams surf at a time with a one hour time limit. Each team nominates an order their team will surf in. Each surfer is allowed 10 mins to catch three waves with their best two waves counting toward the team’s total. They then return to the beach and tag their team mate who repeats the process. One surfer in the team is nominated as the power surfer and all three of their waves are counted toward the team total.
