Curl Wins Magazine of the Year
Written by Curl Magazine
Friday, 29 October 2010
The February issue of CURL magazine has just been voted Magazine Cover of the Year, in this year's Maggies. The Maggies is a new initiative to NZ this year to celebrate the best covers over the past year and CURL not only took the sport category prize Curl took out the overall award. Winners this year of the Maggies in UK and Australia were Vogue and GQ magazine.

"We are so excited to win the overall cover of the year. We were in the ring with some tough competition with titles such as Dish and NZ Geographic it's exciting for an independent publishing company to be recognised over some of the big players. This is a pat on the back for everyone in our office as they are all involved in some ways in the production of the magazine and in particular the final choice of the cover. It's a real team effort where everyone gets an input, from the sales team through to the designer and editor. At times this can be hilarious as we do not always agree, especially when it comes to colour! However, with this particular cover the shot was just so crisp and the colours so clean that the choice was simple."

The photo was taken by our own senior photographer, Steve Dickinson, of Australian surfer Sally Fitzgibbons in Hawaii later last year.  When we first created Curl Magazine there was no one taking images of girls surfing consistently so we took the task on ourselves. I can clearly recall the frustration at seeing all the surf photographers take a break from shooting when the girls went out to compete. Five years later we now have access to a huge assortment of images from some incredible photographers who now have a platform to display their shots of women surfing.

This award is a great achievement for the magazine but also a great achievement for women's surfing itself. Finally the world has caught on to the fact that women can surf and do so unbelievably well. We would not be able to win this award without the incredible talents of all the girls out there charging, so a huge thanks to them.
