Alex Dive (Mnt) has placed 11th at the 2009 Quiksilver ISA World Junior Championships completed at Salinas, Ecuador overnight Sunday. The placing was the highest for the twelve members of the Rip Curl New Zealand Junior Surfing Team who finished the eight day tournament in seventh place out of 28 countries
Dive had contested the qualifying rounds of the Under 18 Boys Division throughout the event but was ousted from the top eight into the repercharge rounds where he was again defeated in the challenging conditions.
While what waves came through had good shape, they were few and far between which meant that you had to position yourself perfectly to make sure you caught the best waves.
Dive’s result pushed the Rip Curl New Zealand Junior Surfing Team into seventh place after a close battle with Tahiti, Costa Rica and Peru who were close behind.
Australia won the teams title thanks to two championships from Dean Bowen (Under 18 Boys) and Tyler Wright (Under 16 Girls). Hawaiian surfer Keanu Asing was the other individual champion winning the Under 16 Boys Division.
Jayda Martin-Fitzharris was the highest placed Kiwi girl placing 16th while Ben Poulter (Rag) was the highest placed Under 16 Boy placing 19th.
