Alex Dive (Mnt) is the last Kiwi standing in the 2009 Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships being held at Salinas, Ecuador at present. Dive is in the last eight surfers of the Under 18 Boys Qualifying Rounds and is set to go head to head with the best surfers in the world overnight (Saturday) in a bid to make the podium for the final day.
After two days of intense competition the Rip Curl New Zealand team achieved excellent results with ten of the twelve surfers moving through to the third to last day of the event. However overnight Friday as competition got tighter and tighter the team suffered losses in all divisions.
Dive enjoyed the time off supporting his team mates and it was Matt Hewitt (Mnt) that was the final Under 18 Boys surfer to fall early this morning after progressing through one repercharge round. Hewitt finished the event placed 13th. Johnny Hicks and Buck Woods of Gisborne also fell early today with Hicks finishing 25th overall and Woods finishing 29th.
In the Under 18 Girls Division it was Gisborne’s Jayda Martin Fitzharris that had a stellar run pushing through to Repercharge Round 6 as the highest placed female in the team. Her run finally came to an end this morning after she placed fourth in her heat to place 16th overall.
Martin-Fitzharris’ team mates fell earlier in the day with Rosa Thompson (Auck), India Wray-Murane (Mur) and Alexis Poulter (Rag) all placing third in their heats and finishing the event placed 25th.
Ben Poulter (Rag) pushed hard in the Under 16 Boys Division but fell late in the day as the highest placed grommet of the Rip Curl New Zealand Team. Poulter placed third in his Repecharge Round 6 heat to finish an excellent 19th overall. Damien Norman placed 25th while Todd Doyle (Mnt) and Joe Moretti (Mimiwhangata) finished in 43rd.

The World Junior Surfing Championships is an annual event having been held since 2003. New Zealand has competed at the event since its inception as well as competing at the World Grommet Titles as it was formerly known since 1989. New Zealand has been one of the top nations at each event with Jay Quinn (Gis) securing New Zealand’s first World Championship in the Under 18 Men’s division in 2001. In 2008 the New Zealand team placed sixth at the event with the best result coming from Airini Mason who placed fourth in the Under 18 Girls Division.
The event is being broadcast live over the net via www.isasurf.org. Media releases relating specifically to the New Zealand team’s performance will be distributed throughout the event.
