The 2013 Billabong Grom Series presented by Oceanbridge swung into action on Saturday 2nd
February with surfers from throughout the country converging on Mount Maunganui for their first age group competition of the year.

In 1.0m – 1.5m waves and light easterly onshore winds at Tay Street, the young surfers pushed their limits to gain the upperhand in the first of three events this summer.

Whangamata surfer Tane Bowden eclipsed all of his opponents surfing three heats throughout the day and demolishing everything that came his way.  Bowden surfed to the highest total heat score, 14.0 out of a possible 20 points.  He attacked the waves he rode completing big turns out the back of the line after playing attention to the coaching tips delivered throughout the day by event coach Matt Scorringe.

“I had some pretty good heats today, I am happy with my scores.  Getting some tips from Matt before our heats was good.  They remind you about what to do out there in your heat and that certainly helped me today” said Bowden.

Bowden moved through to the semifinals of both the Under 12 and Under 14 Boys Divisions.  His Under 14s heat was the tougher battle of the two with Waihi Beach surfer Taine Craig – Ranga pushing Bowden until the final minute of their heat ultimately finishing in second with 11.67 points to Bowden’s 11.9.

Local favourite Kehu Butler looked sharp in his Under 14 Boys heat working his waves through to the inside with ease as he surfed to an 11.5 point total and he will now face Craig – Ranga in the semifinals.

Daniel Farr (Tara) surfed one of the heats of the round late in the day.  The smooth natural footer tore apart several critical end sections, releasing his tail on his way to a 9.7 point heat total and progression into the final eight surfers of the Under 14 Boys Division.  Christchurch surfer Sam Sands rounded out the heat winners from the quarterfinals closing out a tight battle in the last heat of the day to progress alongside Braedyn Louie (Piha).

New Zealand representative Jasmine Smith (Gis) surfed an excellent heat in the Under 16 Girls Division to progress to the semifinals alongside her cousin Abby Falwasser – Logan (Gis).  Smith made the most of the long lefthanders running down the beach to extend a comfortable lead before scoring a 6.33 point ride on a righthander to finish the heat with an 11.43 point heat total.

Local surfer and fellow New Zealand Junior Squad member Kea Smith (Arataki) completed some big single manoeuvres to win her match up.  Surfing up a division from the Under 14 Girls, Smith progressed to the semifinals alongside Elin Tawharu (Mnt) who placed second.  Claudia Fraser (Piha) and Tiana Breeze de Mooj (Mnt) also won their respective low scoring heats to keep their hopes alive of a finals berth on Sunday.

Earlier in the day the Under 16 Boys Division kicked off the event with stand-out performances coming from Korbin Hutchings (Gis) and Te Rapai Barbarich – Love (Tara) who both surfed from the first round of the event.  Hutchings, by his own admission, has not surfed a complete heat at the event.  Despite this fact, he still managed to post good heat scores, his second heat of the day snaring 12.47 points.  Christchurch surfer Harrison Whiteside led charge for the South Island with Jack Wilson (Chch) also moving through to the quarterfinals.  Whiteside completed some big forehand gouges in his heat to score a 10.87 point heat total.
