It was a rough start for the Kiwi boys at the first of several events in Europe with none of them making it past the third round.
The Relentless Board Masters in Newquay was upgraded to a six-star event this
year and was the start of the Suitcase Surfers rise up the rankings in 2010 but
this year turned for the worst early on in the event.
Richard Christie had an unceremonious second round exit in a tough heat placing
third to Thomas Hermes (BRA) and Kiron Jabour (HAW) to finish 49th overall. Off the back of his ninth at the Nike US
Open, this was a shock to the system as were the frigid waters and messy
onshore waves contested.
2010 runner up Jay Quinn and Billy Stairmand both advanced through the second
round to find themselves pitted against one another in the Round of 48. There, Billy found himself advancing through
the heat before he got called for an interference. Meanwhile Jay fell on several waves, his back
foot slipping off his board. The heat
resulted in a third-fourth result for the boys behind Mitchel Coleborn (AUS) and
Gabriel Villiran (PER). Jay edged out Billy to take 25th while Billy
finished in 37th.

The results had little affect on the ASP World Rankings with Ricardo still holding
down 42nd, Billy slipping one place to 51st and Jay also
slipping one place to 60th..
The boys are already in France
for the six-star Sooruz Pro at Lacanau.
The event kicks off tonight with the Round of 144. Ricardo, Jay and Billy will enter the water
in the Round of 96 which will be held on day two at the earliest.
You can watch the Sooruz Pro
live each night from 8:00pm.
