| Paige Hareb and Sally Fitzgibbons on a collision course |
Paige Hareb (Tara) and Sarah Mason (Gis) have been left to battle it out against each other at the Nike US Open of Surfing in California. After first round losses for both surfers, they will go head-to-head in Round 2.
Hareb battled Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS) and Jacqueline Silva (BRA) in the first
round with Fitzgibbons taking the last minute win over Silva with Hareb in
third.
Sarah Mason also placed third in her heat losing to heat winner Courtney
Conlogue (USA) and Malia Manuel (HAW).
The winner of each heat progresses through to the third round while second and
third placed surfers move through to the second round.
The second round match-up is scheduled to take place at 2:00am Thursday (NZT)
with the winner moving through to the third round which will be contested from
5:00am immediately after the second round.

Earlier today Jay Quinn (Gis) placed fourth in his Round of 48 heat to finish
the event in 37th place overall – the top placed Kiwi. Quinn was eliminated by Yadin Nichol (AUS)
and Jesse Mendes (BRA).
The surf remained small all day allowing New Zealand’s male and female surfers
limited opportunity out the back before attempting the infamous ‘Huntington Hop’
onto the inside and a reform close out.
Both Billy Stairmand and Richard Christie failed to make it out of their first
round heats overnight, Stairmand suffering a double interference with Wiggoly
Dantas (BRA) and finishing the heat fourth to Julian Wilson (AUS) and Davey
Cathels (AUS). Christie also finished at
heat later losing to Alejo Muniz (BRA), Lincoln Taylor (AUS) and Brian Toth
(PRI).
