Paige Hareb (Tara) and Phil Morris (Auck) were the lone New Zealand surfers to keep their hopes alive in the main round of the 2011 Billabong ISA World Surfing Games being held in Panama overnight after six of their Quiksilver New Zealand Surfing Team members were relegated to the repechage rounds.
Surfing under an injury cloud, Hareb eased her way to second place behind
Brazilian surfer Silvana Lima who posted an impressive 16.67 point heat total
to move through to the quarterfinals.
Hareb posted a 10.0 point total heat score to relegate the Mexican and South
African surfers to the repechage rounds.
“It's ok, it felt like a dead leg today but it's getting better, just tight and
tender” said Hareb of her condition. “It
still feels bad when I'm surfing, I didn't surf my best today but it wasn’t bad
enough to keep me out of the water” added Hareb who relied on pain killers and
anti-flam to see her through the day.
With the win, Hareb is likely to skip the third day of competition allowing more
recovery time before the event heads toward the big match ups.
“I'm hoping I will get a day off tomorrow to give me a good day of rest and
then I reckon I'll be closer to 100% ready to go again. I'm looking forward to
my next heat though with my best friend Sofia from Peru, the waves were pumping today
so it should be fun!”
Hareb beat Sofia Mulanovich in the final of the 2010 event placing second to
Mulanovich’s third. Hareb will also face
off against Kaleigh Gilchrist (USA) and Leilani McGonagle (CRI).
Longboader Phil Morris (Auck) was the other stand out surfer for the team
placing second in his heat.
Morris scored a 10.70 point heat total to place second behind Piccolo Clemente
(Peru) defeating surfers
from South Africa and Costa Rica. He will now face a challenging third round
match up against Caio Husadel (BRA), Antoine Delporo (FRA) and Heifara Tahutini
(TAH).
The four Kiwis in the Open Men’s Division all suffered fourth placings in their
heats to be relegated to the repechage rounds.
As Mount Maunganui team member JC Susan put it -
“it wasn’t too hard out there. We just
all stuffed up pretty bad. The waves
were good but we picked the wrong ones.”
Susan is confident that the guys will be able to turn their form around
tomorrow when they begin the arduous task of pushing through the repechage
rounds. “We are pretty gutted at the
moment but we have to wipe that out of our thinking and work toward a good
performance tomorrow.”
Grace Spiers (WGM) was also pushed into the repechage rounds of the Women’s
Division after placing fourth as well and is likely to be back in action early
tomorrow.
The New Zealand
team placed seventh from 31 nations in 2010.
The ranking was the highest achieved by the New Zealand Team in the past
decade. The 2011 team will be out to surpass
that excellent result.
