Mount
Maunganui surfers Matt Hewitt and Alex Dive are leading the way for the Rip Curl New Zealand Junior Surfing Team competing at the 2009 Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships.  The two surfers who are contesting the Under 18 Boys Division have advanced through to the last sixteen surfers in the qualifying rounds.

The fourth day of the event was played out in 2.0m – 2.5m waves at Salinas, Ecuador.  The 2009 Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships is being held from the 28th March – 5th of April.

The Mount Maunganui pair are the only two Kiwi surfers left in the main round of the event with their ten team mates having been relegated to the repercharge rounds.

Hewitt placed second in his heat scoring 10.86 to finish behind Nat Young (USA).  Together the surfers eliminated Joaquin Del Castillo (PER) and Johnatan Zambrano (ECU).

Dive also placed second scoring 10.80 out of a possible 20 points to finish behind Jordih Watson (AUS).

The two surfers now face tough competition from the top under 18 surfers from nations such as Brazil, France, Costa Rica, South Africa and Australia.

Both surfers have had previous success at the event with Hewitt placing third in the Under 16 Boys in 2007 and Dive placing thirteenth in 2008.

The New Zealand team lost two further surfers to the repercharge rounds overnight with Rosa Thompson (Auck) placing fourth in her heat to move through to Repecharge Round 4.  In big 2.0m plus waves, Thompson only managed to catch two waves which included a 5.50 and a 1.10.  Thompson needed a 6.21 to progress through the heat but came up short losing to French surfers Canelle Bulrad and Justine Dupont.

In the Under 16 Boys Division, Damien Norman placed fourth in his heat being eliminated by Keanu Asing (Haw) and Mateus Navarro (BRA).  Norman only needed a 5.28 to progress through the low scoring heat but conditions worked against the young 15 year old surfer.

Norman now finds himself in the repercharge rounds along with his three other team mates Ben Poulter (Rag), Joe Moretti (Mimiwhangata) and Todd Doyle (Mnt).

Overnight Gisborne surfers Buck Woods and Johnny Hicks dominated their Under 18 Boys Repecharge Round 3 match ups.  Woods was particularly impressive notching up a 16.50 total heat score – the fourth highest of the division for the event.

The World Junior Surfing Championships is an annual event having been held since 2003.  New Zealand has competed at the event since its inception as well as competing at the World Grommet Titles as it was formerly known since 1989.  New Zealand has been one of the top nations at each event with Jay Quinn (Gis) securing New Zealand’s first World Championship in the Under 18 Men’s division in 2001.  In 2008 the New Zealand team placed sixth at the event with the best result coming from Airini Mason who placed fourth in the Under 18 Girls Division.

The event is being broadcast live over the net via www.isasurf.org.  Media releases relating specifically to the New Zealand team’s performance will be distributed throughout the event.
