The 2013 ISA
World Junior Surfing Championship will be held in Nicaragua from the 12 – 21 July. Surfing New Zealand has developed a programme
for junior surfers in the build-up to the event.
Host Nation: Nicaragua
Dates: 12th–
21st July 2013 (team with be travelling 2-3 days either side of the
event)
Contest Venue: The ISA
is yet to confirm the location of the event.
However the ISA did run the World Masters at Playa Colorado. Check the videos on the link for some crazy good
waves they got - http://isawmsc.com/.
One major change to the World
Junior Surfing Champs this year is that there will now be two girls divisions - Under 18 Girls (2 surfers) and Under 16 Girls
(2 surfers). Previously there
were four Under 18 Girls surfers. This change
has created an excellent opportunity for young girls out there.
Team management and coaches have
been confirmed for the tour:
Manager - Tony
Baker
Assistant Manager
- Warren Asplin
Coach - Jason
Ruddell
The
development programme will give us an excellent build up to the event. We have
pencilled in the following key dates to give everyone a guide to what will take
place. Lock in the dates now and get working toward your goals.
9thOctober – New
Zealand Junior Squad announced (after Primary and National Scholastics events)
3rd - 4th November -
Squad training camp, Piha (dates have been amended)
Dec-June (Dates TBC) - Team
selection camps including fitness testing
The travelling team of 12 surfers
(4 x U16 Boys, 4 x U18 Boys, 2 x U16 Girls, 2 x U18 Girls) will be named on 12th April (three months
out from the event) to enable the team to train and raise the funds needed.
The
approximate tour cost will be $5,000. SNZ is currently looking for sponsorship
and funding avenues to contribute to these costs.
We are looking for surfers that
show commitment and a desire to be the best surfer they can be.
Talent in the water is important but we also want to work with those surfers
that want to be part of a team and
are willing to give 100% both on land as well as in the water.
The New Zealand Surfing Squad will be named in October but that by no means
counts out any surfer that is not named in this initial squad. We have a big
build up to the event in July and if surfers impress during the competitive
season then they will be added to the squad. Likewise, if those selected in the
squad do not show a desire to be part of the team or be the best surfer they
can be, they will be removed from the squad.
Please Note: 2012 team selection
does not automatically qualify you for the 2013 team. Read the selection policy
if you want more information selection criteria.
