It’s brand new, yet it’s already sold five million units. That’s the success story behind the popular Hyundai i45 midsize sedan. Known as the Sonata in the USA and other countries, the model has just clocked up 5,000,000 sales worldwide.
Lined up bumper-to-bumper, that would stretch from New Zealand to England and back: 22,000km. Or pile them up and they would reach Mt Everest’s 8,848m eight hundred times over.
It’s the third Hyundai model to reach the five-million mark, after the smaller Accent (2001) and Elantra (2008).
In the USA, the striking new i45 has been number one midsize sedan in a full comparison test by Car and Driver magazine.
“Sexy sheet metal, solid road manners, attractive interior design, lots of features, impressive mpg ratings,” said the publication. “The first car in its class likely to make the front row in valet parking.”
And the i45 has won an Australian International Design Award, in the coveted Automotive and Transport category for 2010.
“The accolades are beginning to pile up for the i45, which will come as no surprise to anyone who’s driven or even seen the car,” commented Tom Ruddenklau, Chief Operating Officer at Hyundai New Zealand.
“This is a vehicle which graces any driveway in New Zealand …. or around the world.”
