Kibblewhite Claims Tour Title With A Day To Spare

Auckland surfer Thomas Kibblewhite (Red Beach) made easy work of his quarterfinal match up at Port Waikato today (Friday 2ndMarch) to claim the 2012 Hyundai Tour with one day of the Tour remaining.

Facing the biggest storm to hit New Zealand this year, the first day of the event got underway in 2.0m plus waves and onshore westerly winds, conditions that only the heartiest of contestants took on.  However the conditions will not be a shine on what is to come in the next 24 hours.

Kibblewhite simply needed to enter the water to claim the 2012 Hyundai Tour but he put on a show surfing in the middle of the bay at Sunset Beach scoring 14.67 out of 20 points.

“It was pretty fun out there to be honest” Kibblewhite said.  “I went over and surfed those rights in the middle of the bay.  It was solid but there were a few that feathered out the back and allowed you to get in to them early” added Kibblewhite of the less than desirable conditions.

Kibblewhite had an idea of what he had to do at the event to claim the title but he still had that uncertainty when he exited the water, questioning officials just to make sure to clarify the fact.  Upon notification the joy was clearly evident with Kibblewhite having put in a lot of effort over the past three months to achieve the feat.

It is the first title he has secured having contested the Hyundai Tour for six years.  Until 2011 he was unable to win an event placing in the finals on a number of occasions.  However that changed in 2011 when he won the National Championships.  He backed that up with a title defence in 2012 and also won the first event of this year at Raglan.

Today, Kibblewhite’s closest opponent, Matt Cockayne (Auck), faltered in the first round of the day although once Kibblewhite had entered the water he was never going to be catchable on the ratings.

Other surfers to move through to the semifinals of the Men’s Longboard included winner of the fourth event of the Hyundai Tour Ant McColl (Mnt), Dylan Barnfield (Ohope) and Zen Wallis (Piha) who all won their quarterfinal match ups.

It was only the Men’s Longboard surfers that had success in the difficult conditions with the age group divisions and the women all playing out low scoring heats.

Alexis Poulter (Rag) and Mischa Davis (Piha) both kept their hopes alive in the Women’s Division as did defending champion Shelley Jones (Auck) who now requires her higher rated opponents to lose in the semifinals to have any chance of defending her title.

Mark Hoyle (Orewa), currently ranked second in the Over 50s Division survived a lucky scare after snapping his board in two during his heat.  However he did do enough to progress through to the semifinals with his performance prior to that scare.  David Storck (Piha), Michael Thomson (Rag) and Viv Treacy (Ocean Beach) also won their heats.

The early rounds of the Stand Up Paddleboard Division got underway with a number of the competitors heading miles out to sea tackling the massive waves.  Local surfer Damon Mark (Port Waikato) was one of the top scorers of the round scoring 9.23 points along with Regan Farlie (East Cape) who progressed with 9.93 points.  First and second placed surfers in the first round progressed through to meet the top seeds in the quarterfinals which were to be held this afternoon.

The weather system approaching the North Island will be assessed further tonight be a decision will be made in regards to running through the event further on Saturday.  The conditions are expected to be atrocious with gale force winds and massive seas.  Event management are discussing the option of completing the event on Sunday should tomorrow’s conditions be too unsafe to surf.
