The Surf Raconteur New Zealand Longboard Team heads to the inaugural International Surfing Association (ISA) World Longboard Championship in Peru next week.
The event is being held at Haunchaco, Peru and will see the best longboarders in the world competing for their respective nations. The event runs over seven days from the 22nd – 28th of September.
New Zealand is sending a full team of four surfers to the event. The team comprises Ant McColl (Mnt) and Zen Wallis (Piha) in the Men’s Longboard Division, Belinda Goodwin (Rag) in the Women’s Longboard Division and Jordan Griffin (Mnt) in the Under 18 Men’s Longboard Division.
This is the first time that longboard surfing has had a separate world event. Previously the discipline has been included as part of the ISA World Surfing Games.
New Zealand’s number one ranked team member Ant McColl will be representing New Zealand for the first time.
“I am frothing on the trip, the furthest afield I have surfed is Australia so there will be a lot of new experiences to go along with the international competition” said McColl who has one goal in mind “Oh to win for sure, everyone enters an event to win” he added.
“Firstly I want to represent New Zealand with pride, show the world who we are and I want to compete in a good manner but if things go my way and I make a few heats, you never know what can happen” said McColl.
The sole female in the team, Belinda Goodwin, will also venture past Australia for the first time.
“It is a real privilege to represent New Zealand and I think this being the first ever ISA World Longboarding Championship and me being the only female in the team makes it even more special” said Goodwin.
“I have spent much of the past two months fundraising. Through getting out and selling raffles etc, I have met some great and highly supportive people who have helped me along the way. Groups like the Perry Foundation and Gallagher and also the Raglan Lions, without their support, representing New Zealand would have been near impossible” she added.
As the youngest member of the team, Mount Maunganui’s Jordan Griffin is one of the most experienced having represented New Zealand at the 2012 ISA World Junior Championships, that time on his shortboard.
The multi-talented surfer feels that his experiences in Panama in 2012 will help a lot at this event. “I am pretty pumped, I am looking forward to travelling with a different crew of surfers, I think this event will have a different atmosphere to the junior event I attended last year” said Griffin. “Peru sounds very different to New Zealand although we are surfing a lefthand point break so I have been trying to get as many lefts as possible recently” he added.
Griffin, like Goodwin, has been working hard to fund the trip via a surf contest he organised in conjunction with McColl, also surfboard raffles and a movie night.
The fourth member of the team, Zen Wallis made an early departure this week, heading to California for a week before making his way down to Peru. Wallis is an ex-New Zealand representative as well, competing at the 2011 ISA World Surfing Games on a shortboard.
The event is set to attract the best longboard surfers in the world with the likes of current Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Longboard Champion Taylor Jensen (USA) confirmed to compete as well as his team mate Tony Silvagni who sits inside the top ten surfers in the world.
The ISA will have a live stream of the 2013 ISA World Longboarding Championship from the 22nd September.
