Dune Kennings (WGM) has today (Sunday 29
th April) claimed the ultimate prize in New Zealand junior surfing winning the Under 16 Boys Division at Maz Quinn’s Quiksilver King of the Groms presented by Don’t Let The Sun Get Under Your Skin. Kennings gains an invite to the international final to be held in France during October which in turn runs alongside the Quiksilver Pro.

The second day of the event was played out in perfect 1.0m peaks at Wainui Beach, Gisborne to the delight of New Zealand’s best grommets.  Event namesake Maz Quinn who grew up surfing the exact peaks that were contested today was elated to see the event run in pumping waves where he grew up noting that no national events had been held at that location since the 1991 National Championships.

Kennings won the Under 16 Boys Final scoring 15.17 out of 20 points.  He got off to a flying start on the hooter where he scored a 6.33 point ride.  He then lucked into a long lefthander where he proceeded to smash several big turns to post an 8.83 out of a possible 10 points.  The two waves in the first five minutes of the final set up Kennings so that he could be selective and pick off the best waves from then on.  Ultimately his score line did not change for the remainder of the final.

“For sure the best waves win heats and I got a quick start and worked on it from there and got bigger and better waves and it paid off in the final” said Kennings.

“I was talking to Kehu and I said left or right and he said right so I took off on the left, raced down the line and flew over that section and from there the wave opened up and I got a couple more reos in” he added of the final-high 8.83 point ride.

As the clock wound down his opponents slowly worked themselves back into contention.  With five minutes remaining the pressure was on and Kennings switched to defensive mode protecting his lead until in the final minute both he and Elliot Paerata – Reid (Piha) crossed paths with Paerata – Reid incurring an interference pushing him back to third place.

“Yeah well I knew the right was predominant and it was going to peel better so I was going to always go it and he tried to go left and got the interference and I didn’t” said Kennings of the close call.

“I don’t know what to expect in France.  Hopefully it is going to be amazing, surf against the best and watch the best basically” mused Kennings on his pending trip overseas.

Bowden continued his good run of form to finish second in the final after earlier exploding in the semifinals.  Bowden finished with a 10.90 point heat score ahead of Paerata – Reid on 8.75.  Triple finalist Kehu Butler (Mnt) finished fourth in the final clearly running out of energy after surfing his sixth heat of the day.

However it was Butler that claimed his second title of the day in the DC Shoes Under 14 Boys Division.  He was unstoppable in the final swinging into a wave on the starting hooter and posting an 8.0 point ride.  Midway through the final he eventually took the lead and then went on to score the heat-high 8.60 point ride to extend his lead.

“It was pretty hard to get a wave some times but the barrels were pretty fun” said Butler playing down his double title.

Manu Scott – Arrieta (Sandy Bay) challenged for the lead late scoring a 7.50 point ride to get himself out of a combination situation but he was left requiring a 9.11 point ride and had to settle for second.  Taranaki surfer Isaac Kettle finished third in the final scoring 10.20 ahead of Tane Bowden (WGM) in fourth on 8.70.

Butler wins himself a trip to the Gold Coast Quiksilver Pro in March.  “I can’t wait to go over to the Quiksilver Pro, I want to watch Kelly Slater surf” said Butler.

Bianca Sansom (Albany, Auck) claimed her first win of the year in the Roxy Under 16 Girls Division overcoming New Zealand representative and local surfer Jasmine Smith who put up a strong fight throughout the 25 minute final.  Sansom started the final strong with a 6.0 point ride and then left it until her last wave to score a 7.57 point ride and seal the win.  Last minute jitters did creep in as Smith equalled Sansom’s top score.  However it was not enough and once the results were read out, with surfers already on the beach, Sansom jumped into her mum’s arms with excitement.

“I was so nervous when Jasmine got that last one but when they (scores) were called out, I don’t know, it just turned to total happiness” said an overwhelmed Sansom. “The girls have been pushing my surfing so much this year and Jasmine has been ripping and pushing my surfing heaps too so it is good to finally win one.

Sansom wins a trip to the Roxy Pro on the Gold Coast of Australia next March where she will be able to witness the best female surfers in the world.  “It is going to be the best experience ever.”

Placing second in the final was Smith who was the only surfer to put up a serious fight against Sansom scoring 12.80.  Piha surfer Claudia Fraser placed third in the final, this event being the fourth time she has placed third at a national event.  Local surfer Abby Falwasser – Logan placed fourth in the final.

Kehu Butler took out his first final of the day in the Sequence Surf Shop Under 12 Boys Division after an 8.83 point ride early in the heat pushed him out in front of his opponents.  His flawless forehand hacks tight in the pocket saw him ride to his best wave score and he backed that up with a 5.60 point ride for a 14.43 point total.  Tane Bowden (WGM) came back at him in the late stages of the final but never really challenged for the lead requiring an 8.88 point ride and he finished in second place overall.  Lee Ririnui (Mnt) claimed third place to equal his results from the past two events.  In fourth place was Jared Gebert (Ohope) who surfed in his second final of the season.

Please see below for final results from Maz Quinn’s Quiksilver King of the Groms presented by Don’t Let The Sun Get Under Your Skin completed today (Sunday 29th April) at Stockroute, Wainui Beach
