After two days of the Billabong Occy Grom Comp being held at Duranbah, Queensland Australia, the Kiwi groms are on the back foot after suffering several heavy defeats in the early rounds of the event.
All but three surfers have contested their first rounds with only Patxi Scott - Arrieta (Sandy Bay) and the youngest of the Kiwi's competing - Kehu Butler progressing through their heats to remain in the event.
Scott - Arrieta will be up again today in the second round of the Under 16 Boys Division surfing against the best Australians Creed McTaggart, Jake Cumberland and Sam Morgan.
Butler is also likely to surf again today when he takes on his quarterfinal opponents.
Those to also progress through their first heats included Manu Scott - Arrieta and Bianca Sansom 13th and 10th respectively.
Tane Wallis, Ben Poulter, Waretini Wano, Peri Matenga, Fintan Cram, Adam Grimson and Gaby Sansom all suffered first round defeats.
Ella Williams, Elliot Paerata - Reid and Dune Kennings will all get their campaigns underway today.
