Angie Koops of Christchurch but now residing in Australia claimed the blue ribbon Open Women's Division at the 2011 Girls Surf Slam Queensland Championship in clean 1.5m – 2m waves at Palm Beach (Queensland) over the weekend.
It was a special victory for the Palm
Beach local, claiming a spot in the trials of the 2012
ASP World Tour Roxy Pro event at Snapper Rocks.
Peaking perfectly in the final, Koops was the standout surfer of the day, with
her polished style she attacked the tricky beach break conditions with
confidence, proving too good for her nearest rivals.
Koops went on to post an impressive two-wave heat total of 13.90 (out of a
possible 20) in the final, trumping Sophie Callister (Noosa Heads, Qld – 5.23),
Eden Putland (Currumbin, Qld – 11.50) and Dimity Stoyle (Maroochydore, Qld –
8.23) who finished second to fourth respectively.
“I am so stoked,” said Koops.
“I have come so close so many times, so to win today and qualify for the trials
of the Roxy Pro at Snapper Rocks is a dream come true. I have always wanted to
compete in that event,” she said.
