The Quiksilver New Zealand Surfing Team had a horror day of competition on day four of the 2009 Billabong ISA World Surfing Games being held in Costa Rica with four of the team’s eight surfers bowing out of the event. Jay Quinn (Gis) and the two longboard surfers Thomas Kibblewhite (Auck) and Daniel Procter (Gis) are the last three remaining surfers in the event for New Zealand.
Laura Rishworth (Mnt) was the highest placed Kiwi in the Women’s Division placing 17th overall after finishing third in her fourth round match up. Rishworth came up against two Hawaiian surfers who progressed through the heat while she beat the Tahitian surfer who finished fourth.
Daisy Thomas (Chch) also contested the fourth round placing 21st overall after finishing fourth in her heat. Thomas was beaten by surfers from Japan, Ecuador and Puerto Rico. In the Open Men’s Division Matt Hewitt (Mnt) placed 33rd overall after finishing third in his fourth round heat.
Hewitt was in the running throughout the low scoring heat but good waves were few and far between hampering Hewitt’s skills to challenge for progression. Gauranga Ormond (WGM) finished the event placed 41st overall. Ormond was another surfer to fall victim to the conditions and was unable to get his wave count up while his competitors looked to be more aggressive in search of a win.
In early proceedings today (Thursday NZT) Thomas Kibblewhite has progressed through to the last 16 surfers in the Longboard Division. Kibblewhite progressed through two rounds in style with big scores to win both of his 20 minute heats. Kibblewhite scored 11.25 to win his first heat and 13.65 to win his second heat.
Daniel Procter (Gis) suffered a shock loss in his first heat of the event but bounced back with two heat wins in the repecharge round to remain alive. Procter scored 10.33 points out of a possible 20 which included a 7.0 point ride.
Day six is will see Jay Quinn, Thomas Kibblewhite and Daniel Procter back in the water in the Open Men’s and Longboard Divisions. They will attempt to push through several heats to help the team surpass the 10th ranking from 2008. The Quiksilver New Zealand Team will also contest the tag team event over the next two days.
