The Rip Curl New Zealand Junior Surfing Team made tough work of day three of the 2011 Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championship in Peru overnight (Wednesday 25th
May).

Five surfers were relegated to the repechage rounds of the event after today’s action.  That leaves four kiwi surfers in the qualifying rounds and eight in the repechage rounds where it is do or die in each and every heat.

Gisborne surfer Jayda Martin – Fitzharris (Gis) was the lone female to move through to the third round of the Under 18 Girls Division.  Martin – Fitzharris toughed it out in a close 20 minute battle to place second behind runaway heat leader Kaena Brandi (BRA).  She scored 6.97 points in her heat 0.30 points ahead of her Japanese counterpart with the American surfer placing fourth.

Fitzharris moves through to the third round which is jam packed with 24 of the best young female surfers in the world.

“The level of surfing has definitely gone up since my first year competing at this event in 2009” said Martin – Fitzharris.  “Every heat is a hard heat; you just have to go into the heat knowing you have the ability to get through to the next round.”

Her fellow team mates did not fear so well in the same round with the Whangamata duo of Ella Williams and Grace Spiers placing third in their low scoring match ups.  They now face a tough task of progressing through the repechage rounds.

“Yeah gutted as but at least I still have another life left in the repechage rounds.  It is all or nothing now” said a disappointed Spiers who is competing in the event for the second and final time.

Meanwhile Williams is still busy in taking the event, this being her first World Junior Surfing Championship experience.  “The trip has been amazing so far.  The comp is what I thought it would be like and more.  It is exciting surfing against all the other surfers and meeting new people” said an upbeat Williams despite her loss.

The Under 16 Boys suffered the same fate as the girls with Paul Moretti (Mimiwhangata), Dune Kennings (WGM) and Adam Grimson (Gis) unable to find quality waves in the small 1.0m conditions at the Senoritas break – the left-hand point break.

“I didn’t keep busy enough on the waves that I caught” said Moretti of his short comings in his heat.  “Tomorrow I am going to have to get psyched up for my heat and prepare properly staying out of the sun as much as possible then take it to the world.”

Grimson was unlucky in his heat finishing with a good last wave that his team mates thought was enough for progression.  However, with a requirement of 4.38 points out of ten, the score came in at 3.73 and he joined his three team mates in the repechage rounds.

On the second podium Elliot Paerata – Reid (Piha) and Alexis Poulter (Rag) won their respective heats in convincing fashion.  Paerata – Reid scored 15.50 points out of a possible 20 points in his heat – the highest heat score of the division to date.  In winning his heat, Paerata – Reid moves through to the second repechage round where he meets up with his Kiwi team mates.

Poulter was equally impressive scoring a 13.66 point heat total for an easy victory that sees her also meet up with her team mates in round two.

The under 18 boys all had a lay day today.  Tomorrow Todd Doyle (Mnt), Tane Wallis (Piha) and Joes Moretti (Mimiwhangamata) have another lay day as does Jayda Martin Fitzharris (Gis).

The Rip Curl New Zealand Junior Surfing Team includes surfers from six regions throughout New Zealand with the small surf town of Whangamata providing three surfers, Northland, Auckland, Raglan, Gisborne all providing two surfers a piece with one representative from Mount Maunganui.

The event is being held at Punta Hermosa, Lima, Peru from the 21st – 29th
May with two arenas catering for a record 276 surfers from 27 countries competing at the event.

The World Junior Surfing Championships is an annual event having been held since 2003.
New Zealand has competed at the event since its inception as well as competing at the World Grommet Titles as it was formerly known since 1989.  New Zealand has been one of the top nations at each event with Jay Quinn (Gis) securing New Zealand’s first World Championship in the Under 18 Men’s division in 2001.  In 2010 the New Zealand team placed seventh at the event when it was held in New Zealand for the first time in the events history.
