The Quiksilver New Zealand Surfing Team suffered losses from their three remaining surfers on day four of the 2011 Billabong ISA World Surfing Games held in Panama early this morning (Thursday 30th June).
Paige Hareb, gunning for back-to-back finals hit a speed bump in her fourth
round match up losing to the Australian duo of Dimity Stoyle and Jessi
Miley-Dyer in one of the tightest tussles of the day.
Hareb started the heat well posting a 6.00 point ride on the first wave of
the heat before getting a 5.43 point ride to lead the two Australians. From there Miley-Dyer struck back jumping
into the lead before the youngest of the three competitors, Stoyle, struck a
blow to Kiwi hopes surfing to a 6.36 point ride to jump from third to first.
The loss means Hareb is relegated to the repechage rounds where she will
have three heats to contest in order to make it through to the final. Hareb is likely to contest her next heat
tomorrow (Friday morning New
Zealand time).
The event came to an end for the two New Zealand longboard surfers with
Phil Morris (Auck) placing 13th and Matt Cockayne (Auck) 16th.
Morris was pitched against a talent laden heat where he battled to find the
right waves in the 1.0m beach break waves that were severely affected by the
full tide.
Morris got off to a slow start while French surfer Remi Azaura ran away
with the lead leaving Morris to fight it out for second place with one of the
event favourites Dane Pioli (AUS).
Morris finished with a 10.04 point heat total, the Australian edging
ahead on both of his waves to score 12.32 points and progress in second place.
Cockayne placed fourth in his wave starved heat despite opening his account
with a 6.0 point ride early on. From
this point he fell away from the leaders in the fast paced heat which saw the
front runners catch several high scoring rides without Cockayne being able to
find a wave that scored more than 1.0 point.
Ultimately Cockayne required a 7.12 point ride for progression with the
ocean simply not delivering the opportunity for him to mount a challenge.
Action commences at 1:00am on Friday morning.
Paige Hareb will contest the final round of day five which is scheduled
to hit the water at approximately 7:40am New Zealand time.
The Quiksilver New Zealand Surfing Team will also contest the Aloha Cup tag
team event on the final day of the event scheduled to take place on Saturday
morning (New Zealand
time). The event pitches five surfers
from each of the top eight countries against each other in an hour long heat
where the teams cumulative points count toward final placings.
The New Zealand
team placed seventh from 31 nations in 2010.
The ranking was the highest achieved by the New Zealand Team in the past
decade. However the 2011 team currently
sit in twelfth place at this event with nothing short of a big result from
Hareb required to push the team into the top ten.
Please see below for the results from day four of the 2011 Billabong ISA World
Surfing Games being held in Playa Venao, Panama from the 25th
June – 2nd of July.
