From 2005 - 2010 Te Puni Kokiri played a consistent role in assisting the development of Maori Sporting Bodies. A commitment by TPK to form a partnership with Surfing New Zealand and invest in the development of administration, coaching and judging initiatives was seen as a way forward in capitalising on business and employment opportunities that are present or emerging in the sport and the surfing industry. The investment in initiatives also provided associated benefits and career pathways outside the sport.

Maori Surf continues to carry the Auahi Kore kaupapa at all its events. Smoking and tobacco has long been a barrier for
Maori development as far too often Maori die from smoking related illness.
Through the promotion of the Auahi Kore kaupapa at all surfing events and
competitions it is hoped that surfing can change attitudes towards smoking,
encouraging Maori to either stop smoking or not to start and choosing to adopted
a healthy smokefree lifestyle.

Whānau Development Sport and Culture programme
In realising that sport is a viable employment or career option TPK through its Whānau Development Sport and Culture programme is providing assistance and support for those wanting to be involved in the sport and leisure Industry. Surfing NZ in partnership with Te Puni Kokiri continue to initiate projects for the development of the sport for Maori.
Taha Maori
All SNZ initiatives are Marae based to provide an opportunity for Maori to reunite themselves with their taha Maori. It had become apparent that many surfers have been urbanised and had not had the opportunity or been exposed to tikanga and kawa. Surfing New Zealand projects are designed to introduce portions of tikanga and kawa to act as a stimuli to encourage Maori to strengthen their cultural and iwi identity and to allow participants to be immersed in the processes.
