Sunshine and small surf greeted the 45 competitors at the South Island Mini Groms Surfing Champs in North Beach last Saturday. The Primary & Intermediate age school kids went hard to try and secure themselves a South Island title in one of the four age groups.
The event was dominated by the juniors from the North Wai Boardriders club who filled 13 of the 16 finalist spots. The surprise however came from Dunedin’s Xavier Campbell who won the year 7 and year 8 boys divisions. Campbell had constantly scored 7 and 8 point rides out of 10 through his heats all day.
Sam Sands from the North Wai Club in Christchurch pushed Campbell hard in the year 7 boys final only to be beaten by 0.2.
Sands won the year 6 final in convincing fashion and also placed fourth in the year 8 boys final. Sands surfed in a marathon 10 heats in total and lacked the energy to be a threat in the year 8 final.
The year eight girls final was won by Katie Nicholson from the North Side Boardriders Club in Kaiapoi for the third year in a row. Nicholson also won the development package worth $1350.00 consisting of a new surfboard from Exit Surf & a wetsuit from Seventh Wave.
