The Quiksilver New Zealand Surfing Team has contested the first two days of the 2008 ISA World Surfing Games with mixed results.  The team standouts to date include Luke Cederman (Rag) and Maz Quinn (Gis) who have progressed through two rounds of the Open Men and Daryn Mcbride (Mnt) who has progressed through two rounds of the Longboard Division.  Gisborne’s Jarred Ferris has also impressed moving through to the second round of the Men’s Bodyboard Division.

The 2008 ISA World Surfing Games are currently being held at Costa Da Caparica, Portugal.  The prestigious biennial event known as the Olympics of surfing takes place from the 11th – 19th of October.

Luke Cederman (Rag) was one of the standouts on the second day of competition when he had the whole beach hooting at his progressive style of surfing.  Cederman scored 15.84 to win his first heat and the total he amassed was one of the highest of the day.  Cederman posted single wave scores of 8.17 and 7.67.  He now faces American World Tour surfer Ben Bourgeois, Under 16 World Champion Tamaroa McComb (Tah) and Simon Marchand (Fra) in the next round which will be contested overnight Tuesday.

Maz Quinn (Gis) also moved through to the round of 32 surfers in the Open Men’s Division after placing second in both of his heats with scores of 13.93 and 10.27 respectively.  Due to ASP World Qualifying Series commitments Quinn has not been part of the New Zealand team for over six years.  However Quinn will be looking to lead the Quiksilver New Zealand team to a solid result at this event and has already taken charge and is leading from the front of the pack.  Quinn now faces Klee Strachan (ZAF), Charly Martin (FRA) and another World Tour surfer – Amreican CJ Hobgood in the next round.

Fellow open men’s team members Leon Santorik (Rag) and Zennor Wernham (Rag) both suffered a case of competitive nerves and placed third in their first round heats.  They will now take ‘the long road’ and contest the repercharge rounds.  The road to the final via the repercharge rounds is considerably more challenging with surfers having to contest almost double the amount of heats as those surfers that stay in the qualifying rounds.

Mount Maunganui’s Daryn Mcbride also got off to a great strat progressing through to the third round of the Longboard Division.  Mcbride had to tackle the punchy 1.5m shore break conditions on his nine-foot longboard but he managed to place second in both of his heats to move through to the last eight surfers in the qualifying round.  Mcbride now confronts some of the best longboarders in the world in the form of 2007 World Champion Phil Rajzman (BRA), Taylor Jensen (USA) and Harley Ingleby (AUS) who is currently leading the 2008 World Tour.

Gisborne’s Jarred Ferris moved through the first round of the Men’s Bodyboard Division on day one of the event posting a total heat score of 9.25 to place second in his heat.  Fellow men’s bodyboarder Andrew Low (Blaketown) was not so lucky finishing a close third in his heat.  Female bodyboarder Mihi Wells (Auck) placed third in her first round heat also after scoring a 6.50 point ride early on in the heat but not being able to find a second wave in excess of the 2.26 required for progression.

Day three of the event will see Jessica Santorik (Rag) and Daisy Thomas (Chch) make a start in the early rounds of the women’s division.  All open men will be back in the water as well with qualifying round 3 (Maz Quinn and Luke Cederman) as well as repercharge round 1 (Zennor Wernham and Leon Santorik).  The bodyboarders and longboarders will have another day off.
