More Grom Action on the Way

The second of three events in the Billabong Grom Series presented by Oceanbridge takes place at Whangamata this weekend (23-24 February) with junior surfers from around the country fired up to get back to the Coromandel Peninsula seaside town.

The amazing summer weather has continued this week and is forecast to blaze all weekend with surf to boot.  The surf has slowly built all week and will peak on Friday, the day before the event starts, before tapering off through into the weekend offering up ideal conditions for the youngsters.

The first event of the series took place at Mount Maunganui three weeks ago where the groms all enjoyed a sizeable swell and an awesome two days of surfing.

The first event of the series is all about ushering groms into new divisions after the January roll over.  Battle lines are drawn in the sand in regards to the top surfers in each division and a new hierarchy is formed.  Coming into the second event of the series, the surfers have one event result stashed away with the bench mark for improvement set.  They now have a placing in mind that they want to achieve if not improve on before they head into the final event of the series at Piha in two weeks time.

The field of surfers for this weekend is at near capacity and they will no doubt enjoy the vibe at Whangamata, the phenomenally warm water on offer right now and if they are lucky, sample a wave out on the famous Whangamata Bar.

However, most of the focus will be on the event and performances across the six age groups contested.  No one will be more keen to perform than double division winner and local Whangamata surfer Tane Bowden.  The spritely 11-year-old surfer has been practicing at the event site this week in preparation for the weekend.

“The surf is peaky and fun today but it was pretty small at the start of the week” said Bowden.  “I went to Raglan last weekend on a training camp with ‘The Art of Surfing’ so it was good to get some waves over there and then come back and put everything into practice here at Whanga.  The guys at the training camp are also in the event this weekend and it was real fun to train with guys like Kehu (Butler), Taylor (Hutchison), Ben (McCulloch) and Lee (Ririnui).  We did heaps of drills and worked on technique and competition strategy” added Bowden.

After the successful implementation of the free coaching sessions at the Mount Maunganui event, Matt Scorringe from The Art of Surfing will be at the Billabong Grom Series event this weekend giving out tips to all the entrants and taking them on small training sessions on both Saturday and Sunday.

Action at the beach will get underway at 8:00am on Saturday and Sunday with two full days of surfing to get through.

Whangamata Boardriders Club will be hosting the event and feeding everyone at the beach to raise funds for the club.
