The weekend brought several big New Zealand surfing performances on the world stage via short and longboarding disciplines held at events on three different continents.
Paige Hareb (Tara) retained her Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP)
world ranking of tenth-equal after a ninth placing at the Roxy Pro held in
France. Hareb lost her fourth round
match up to young Hawaiian Malia Manuel – 12.10 to 9.16 in small beach break
conditions at Biarritz.
Hareb had earlier placed second in her first round match up to event winner and
new five-time World Champion Stephanie Gilmore (AUS) before defeating local
surfer Pauline Ado. Hareb then lost her
third round match up to 2011 World Champion Carissa Moore (HAW) and Laura
Enever (AUS) before being eliminated from the event by Manuel.
Sarah Mason (Gis) placed thirteenth at the event first losing to Courtney
Conlogue (USA) in the first round then Sofia Mulanovich (Per) in the second
round.
Hareb and Mason have one further ASP World Tour event for the year and need to
finish with a ranking inside the top ten to automatically qualify for the 2013
Tour.
The next event is the Nike US Open of Surfing which takes place at Huntington
Beach, California, USA. However, prior
to that Hareb heads to Peru for a World Qualifying Series event held in
Peru. The Movistar Pro presented by Rip
Curl starts on the 24th July (Tuesday week).
Hareb can also qualify for the 2013 ASP World Tour by placing inside the top
six of the WQS where she is currently ranked sixth. Mason has not contested the WQS in 2012.
New Zealand had two surfers qualify for the ASP World Longboard Tour over the
weekend after the final ASP Australasian event was held in Perth. It is the first time that New Zealand surfers
have ever qualified for the ASP World Longboard Tour.
The Whalebone Classic saw Thomas Kibblewhite (Auck) place fifth at the event
which was enough for him to secure fourth on the overall rankings while Wini
Paul (Sandy Bay) placed third in the Women’s Division at the event which was
enough for her to gain qualification into the Women’s Division finishing third
overall.
The Women’s World Championship Tour event is scheduled for late November. The Swatch Girls Pro will take place in China
and is tentatively scheduled for 24th – 28th November.
The Men’s Event is yet to be scheduled.
Both events cater for the top 32 surfers in the world.
Our elite male surfers on the ASP WQS were also competing in South Africa over
the weekend with Jay Quinn (Gis) retaining his world ranking of 52nd
via a 25th placing at the Billabong Pro held at Jeffreys Bay. Quinn lost his third round heat to current
world number 9 Jordy Smith (ZAF) and Lincoln Taylor (Aus).
Richard Christie (Gis), Billy Stairmand (Rag) and Matt Hewitt (Mnt) also
contested the event placing 49th, 73rd and 121st
respectively. Brazilian Adriano De Souza
won the event over Joan Duru (FRA) and De Souza is now leading the world
rankings.
Quinn, Christie and Stairmand will now contest the Nike US Open of Surfing (six
star prime) while Hewitt will head to Japan to contest the Billabong Pro Tahara
(4 star) which starts on the 25th July.
