Moretti in a class of his own at second event of 2012 Northland Scholastics
Written by Tony Baker
Thursday, 07 June 2012
Paul Moretti (Mimiwhangata) has stormed to a second victory in the 2012 Northland Scholastics Surfing Series held at Ahipara on Friday 18th May. Moretti, who recently returned to school at the Raglan Surfing Academy, blitzed his opponents in the Under 18 Boys Division held in semi-clean 1.0-1.5m waves at "Pines". Moretti posted the highest heat score of the 2012 NSSS with a 18.5 out of a possible 20 points in his opening heat.

After a postponement delayed the event 2 weeks ago, contest organisers liaised with Ahipara local surfers Wayne Harrison, Paul Hansen and Wayne Cribb to get the second event of the series at the famous Northland break. Conditions were far from ideal with rain squalls and near gale force South West winds making for a challenging contest.

In the Under 14 Girls young Kerikeri High School surfer Breeze Durham (Kerikeri) continued the good form that saw her win NSSS1 at Sandy Bay, winning comfortably at Ahipara. The natural footer picked off a couple of nice waves in the final, and showed commitment in the tough conditions. 2012 has seen a growth in the Girl Division and it was great to see Breeze and friends Laura Lee and Tasha Bourton get amongst it at Ahipara.

Robyn Turnbull (Raglan Area School / Mangawhai) was the sole entrant in the Under 18 Girls Division and showed that her time at Raglan has helped her competitive skills. Turnbull, who was a 2011 Northland Team member, charged a couple of good sized waves scoring a 6.0 on one wave and backing it up with a couple of nice waves. Turnbull will be looking to build on her confidence this year and will no doubt be hoping for a spot in the 2012 Northland team.

In the Under 14 Boys Manu Scott-Arietta (WBHS) got to work early in the final, showcasing his consistent backhand and scoring highly with the judges. Scott-Arietta, who is the current Under 14 National Champion, showed why he is the best in his age group easily winning. Second place was taken out by local surfer Spencer Harrison (Kaitaia College) who showed local knowledge to pick off some great waves. Whangarei Boys High School surfers Zac Springford (WBHS) and Tait Mehrtens (WBHS) took out 3rd and 4th place respectively.

The Under 16 Boys Division was hotly contested, with the 22 strong field of competitors enjoying surfing at the Far North point break. In the early rounds Rhys Whitaker (Bream Bay College) picked off some great waves, along with local surfer Sergio Hansen (Kaitaia College). Both surfers progressed to the semi-finals, but Whitaker exited the event after a close fought battle with NSSS1 winner Joe Palmer (Kerikeri High School). In the final it was a one sided affair with Matt Mcgregor (Kamo High School) dominating the 20 minute heat from the opening minutes. McGregor was a favourite being on his forehand, and linked a number of critical turns with powerful round-house cutbacks. Mangawhai Heads surfer Ryan Renall (Rodney College) also enjoyed the long lefts on offer, but couldn't get close to McGregor, finishing in 2nd place. Joe Palmer (Kerikeri High School) had an uncharacteristic slow final, only managing a few scoring rides, placing 3rd ahead of local Sergio Hansen (Kaitaia College) in 4th.

Paul Moretti (Raglan Area School / Mimiwhangata) was the stand-out surfer of the event, and was miles ahead of his fellow competitors in the Under 18 Boys Division easily winning. Flynn Hart (WBHS) backed up a great result at Sandy Bay taking another 2nd place. William Bowden (WBHS), who surfed well in the opening rounds of the division lucked out in the finals placing 4th place behind fellow WBHS team mate Noah Gullick (WBHS).

Thanks to the Ahipara Community for allowing us to run our event on their beautiful coastline, and a special thanks to Kevin Piper - Surfing New Zealand Judge, for his ongoing support with the 2012 NSSS.

The Northland Scholastics Surfing Series organisers are looking to name a squad in the next few weeks, with the aim of selecting the 2012 Northland Team that will compete at the 2012 National Championships to be held in Taranaki in October this year. The 2012 Northland Team is seeking sponsors for the Taranaki campaign and would be very appreciative of any support that people and businesses can offer the team.

Into its 3rd year, the Northland Scholastic Surfing Series has seen a dramatic increase in entry numbers from as far north as Kaitaia and south to Mangawhai.  The aim of the NSSS is to not only develop surfing opportunities in Northland schools, but to provide a pathway for young aspiring Northland surfers to compete at a National Level.

Event Three of the 2012 NSSS is scheduled for 20th July 2012 at Mangawhai Heads. For more information about the 2012 NSSS please don't hesitate to contact us.
