Mount Maunganui surfers claimed both the boys and girls titles at the final day of the National Primary School Championships today (Sunday 30thSeptember) as well as filling five of the eight finals berths to show their regional dominance in junior surfing.

The final day of the event was contested in 1.0m waves at Fitzroy Beach, New Plymouth with winds remaining light all day making for fun conditions.

The champions were Kehu Butler in the Boys Division and Kea Smith in the Girls Division, both surfers surfing away with convincing victories and defending their titles they secured in 2011.  It may be an ominous sign for the region as the strong Bay of Plenty Scholastic Surfing Team kick off their campaign at the National Scholastic Championships starting tomorrow (Monday 1st October).

Butler had looked sharp all event and in the semifinals, posted the highest heat score of the event – 15.50 out of 20 points.  In the final he was equally as dominating posting a 13.67 point heat total leaving his opponents with massive scores required to catch up.  It was midway through the final when Butler latched onto a clean lefthander and he belted two big backhand turns to score a 7.67 point ride.  He then backed that up with a 6.0 point ride for the win.

Placing second in the final was Daniel Farr surfing his home break.  Farr waited patiently at the start of the 20 minute final then, after becoming wave starved, had to play catch up moving from fourth to third then second in the late stages of the final pushing day one standout Tane Bowden (WGM) into third place.  Sonny Rapira – Martin (Tara) placed fourth in the final, competing in his first national event after earlier winning his final round robin heat to make it through to the semifinals and then on to the finals.

In the Girls Division, Kea Smith looked to be in spectacular form all event.  In the final she posted 9.43 out of a possible 20 points fronting up to the full tide conditions and limited wave offerings against her three opponents also from Mount Maunganui.

Smith surfed on her backhand on the lefthanders and completed several controlled turns on her waves to edge out her mates and will be a surfer to watch as she progresses through the age group divisions in the coming years.

Maaia Reid – Bennett (Mnt) placed runner up in the final scoring a 6.47 point heat total while Tiana Breeze de Mooj (Mnt) finished in third and Raiha Ensor (Mnt) finished in fourth place.  All four surfers attend Mount Maunganui Intermediate.

Earlier in the day it was Bowden and Rapira – Martin who eliminated Jared Gebert (Ohope) and Reuben Mottart (Gis) in the first semifinal and Butler and Farr who eliminated Reef Matthews (Tara) and Lee Ririnui (Mnt) in the second semifinal.

In the Girls Division it was Smith and Ensor who eliminated Elin Tawharu (Mnt) and Treyarn Barbarich (Mnt) in the first semifinal and Reid – Bennett and de Mooj who defeated Zhana Hutchieson (Tara) and Iritana Butler (Mnt) in the second semifinal.
