National Club Champs

This is a gathering of the countries boarding clubs to find the premier surfing community of New Zealand.

Clubs draw on their local talent pools to claim national provincial honor’s and serious bragging rights.

The unique Club Championships event morphs surfing into a team concept where surfers compete for their club across standard heats as well as the exciting tag team format.

The top 16 boardrider clubs from our network of over 30 clubs throughout the country select their best team of surfers comprising New Zealand surfing icons, up and coming juniors and legendary seniors to compete at the event.

All major clubs from around New Zealand attend the two-day event.  The objective is to bring clubs together to compete in a team environment, an aspect which is so often missing in standard surfing events.  This gives clubs an event to target and then test themselves against the rest of the country as they cheer on their teammates for provincial glory.

Teams comprise five surfers total – two men, one female, one junior (under 18) and one senior (over 40).  Reserves are permitted and teams can split individual duties between the tag team and standard heats.

The tag team event is a relay-styled format where teammates have a total of one hour to go out and catch three waves each in succession with the team’s total points tallied to find an overall winner against the other clubs.

On top of the tag team event, each surfer competes in their age group in standard heats to find division winners with the points split evenly between the tag team format and the individual heats.

The event is highly entertaining and innovative bringing together surfers in a positive, fun-filled environment leveraging
