The New Zealand Surfing Team has finished twelfth at the ISA Lost Energy Drink 2006 World Surfing Games held at Huntington Beach California over the past nine days. The result is one placing higher than the team secured in 2004 at the biennial event. Whangamata’s AJ Matthews and Piha’s Mischa Davis were the two standout performers for the New Zealand team finishing 25th in the Open Men’s and 15th in the Open Women’s respectively.
Huntington Beach produced some excellent waves over the period of the event and AJ Matthews capitalised making it through to the fifth round only to be narrowly defeated in the dying seconds of his heat by a slim 0.06.
Matthews was “stoked” on his overall placing and the chance to surf alongside ASP World Championship Tour surfer Chris Ward (who won the heat). Fellow Kiwi Open Men’s surfers were eliminated the round prior to Matthews with Luke Cederman (Rag) finishing 33rd, Zennor Wernham (Rag) and Morehu Roberts (Gis) 41st.
Mischa Davis (Piha) also surfed through to round 5 of the Open Women’s division with some resilient performances most notably in her round four heat when she posted 11.17 points out of 20 to move through to the fifth round in second place. In the fifth round Davis was in contention throughout the heat but could not find the 5.94 point ride required for progression and finished in fourth for an overall placing of 15th. Lisa Hurunui (Gis) who took a knock to her face in training prior to the event finished in 32nd place with the injury appearing to have an affect on her performance.
The New Zealand bodyboarders were lead by Andrew Low (Dun) who finished 29th in the Men’s division with Hayden Parsons (Dun) in 42nd. Mihi Wells (Auck) placed 12th in the Women’s division narrowly being pipped for progression in her second round heat.
Thomas Kibblewhite (Auck) began his campaign well but was eliminated in another close battle in the second round of the repercharge rounds to finish 17th at his first ever World Surfing Games.
