The Quiksilver New Zealand Surfing Team has finished eleventh at the 2009 Billabong ISA World Surfing Games completed at Playa Hermosa, Costa Rica overnight (Saturday). The final result was one place behind the 2008 team who finished tenth at the event described as the Olympics of surfing when it was held in Portugal.
The United States of America won the event for the first time in 13 years. Jeremy Flores (FRA) won the Open Men’s Division, Courtney Conlogue (FRA) won the Open Women’s Division and Antoine Delpero (FRA) won the Longboard Division.
The Kiwi’s run ended on the penultimate day of the event when the final two surfers were eliminated from the event as well as the New Zealand tag team contesting the Aloha Cup bowing out in the semifinals.
Gisborne surfers Jay Quinn and Daniel Procter went into the seventh day of the event hoping to further their cause and get an individual podium finish as well as push the Quiksilver New Zealand team up the world rankings however it was not to be.
Quinn, contesting the Open Men’s Division, placed third in his heat behind young Brazilian surfers Miguel Pupo and Gabriel Medina scoring a total heat score of 8.32 out of a possible 20. Quinn only needed an average score of 5.14 to progress through the heat but it proved too difficult in the often fickle 4-6ft conditions. Quinn managed to beat current world number 13 Mick Campbell (AUS) in the heat with Campbell placing fourth. Quinn finished his campaign placed 13th overall, surpassing his brother Maz’s 17th placing in the event in 2008 as the top Kiwi surfer.

Procter also found himself behind the eight ball in the Longboard Division competing against World Champion Bonga Perkins (HAW) and Benoit Clemente (PER) who progressed through the heat in first and second respectively. Procter scored a total of 7.00 points in his heat and required a further 6.05 point ride for progression to the next round. Procter finished the heat third ahead of Michael Hill (ZAF). Procter also placed 13th overall as the highest placed Kiwi surfer for his division. In 2008 Kiwi Daryn McBride finished in ninth overall in the Longboard Division.
The Quiksilver New Zealand team then surfed in the fiercely contested Aloha Cup tag team event. The New Zealand team came up against Australia, France and locals Costa Rica in the semifinal placing fourth. Despite Quinn getting the team out to a huge lead early on, the team could not maintain their position against the other three nations with Australia and France progressing to the final. Australia went on to win the Aloha Cup.
