Day four of the 2012 DaKine ISA World Junior Surfing Championship held at Playa Venao, Panama saw the New Zealand surfers fight back in the repecharge rounds where the first surfers were eliminated from the event.

The Rip Curl New Zealand Junior Surfing Team had six surfers in action with four progressing through to the fifth day of competition while two exited the event.

The World Junior Surfing Championship is being held from the 14-22 April and includes over 300 surfers from 31 countries.

In sometimes inconsistent waves in the 1.0m range, Ben Poulter (Rag), Tane Wallis (Piha), Korbin Hutchings (Gis) and Alethea Lock (Chch) progressed through their must-win heats.

Korbin Hutchings left his run late in the shortened 15 minute heats scoring a 6.0 with a few minutes to go in the heat.  The wave elevated him from fourth to first and progression alongside the surfer from Jamaica.

“I got an average wave early and tried to keep busy but it was hard out there and the waves didn’t come my way” said Hutchings.  “I had to move closer in at the end and try get a second score and that left-hander popped up and I was pretty lucky that it ran all the way to the beach and I got a six” he added in regards to how the final minutes of the heat unfolded.

It is the first time that Hutchings has attended the event and he now moves through to the third round where he faces surfers from Barbados, Portugal and Peru.

In the Under 18 Boys Division Ben Poulter and Tane Wallis progressed via two completely different pathways.

Poulter raced out to the lead in his heat with a near excellent 7.17 point ride on a long right-hander.  He caught the wave in the opening minutes of the heat and then immediately backed it up with a 4.0.  From that point Poulter put the pressure on his opponents who could not catch up in the short time frame allocated.

“I got off to a good start with a long right that scored 7.17 then backed it up with a 4 straight away which took the pressure off. 15 minute heats are hard, it is so crucial to start strong which I was able to do today” Poulter said.

The team captain will now face off against surfers from Italy, Hawaii and Guatemala in the third round.

Wallis on the other hand left his run late after sitting on a couple of low scoring two point rides until the dying stages of the heat.  Sitting in third place, Wallis squeezed out a 3.77 point ride which pushed him up into progression by a mere 0.03 points.

Yet to fire a decent shot at the event, Wallis is through to the third round and due for a strong performance.  He will need a solid result tomorrow (Friday NZT) in the third round when he fronts up to surfers from Peru, Portugal and Barbados.

Alethea Lock was the fourth of the Kiwi surfers to move through her repecharge round.  The Christchurch surfer did herself no favours early in the heat when she incurred an interference with another surfer.  However that made her more determine in her performance as she bounced back with a 7.33 point ride to finish her heat with an 8.23 point heat total.

Lock now meets up with her two team mates Jayda Martin – Fitzharris (Gis) and Jasmine Smith (Gis) in the second repecharge round.

Falling short of progression today were Paul Moretti (Mimiwhangata) and Harrison Whiteside (Chch).  The surfers both finished the event in 65th place.

Both surfers got off to slow starts in their heats which were held over the full tide.  Moretti needed a meagre 2.07 point ride and went hunting for it late in the heat only to come up short with a 1.93 point ride finishing in third behind surfers from Brazil and El Salvador.

Whiteside had to contend with a heat practically void of waves, the young South Island surfer left requiring a 3.0 point ride for progression but he was unable to get it.

The swell is expected to build over the next two days and ease for the final day of the event.  Please see below for New Zealand results from day four of the 2012 DaKine ISA World Junior Surfing Championship presented by Billabong.
