Two New Zealand surfers have been confirmed as scholarship recipients from the International Surfing Association (ISA) today (Monday 3rdSeptember). The surfers are Piha’s Waretini Wano and Gisborne’s Dayna Story.
The two surfers are included in a group of 27 surfers from around the world who
have been selected to be part of the programme for the next twelve months.
Story found herself excitedly jumping up and down around her computer while
accompanied by her family.
“I think it is going towards getting a new surfboard, I have wanted one for
ages so this money will help out with that.
It will just help me all round with my surfing” said Story who has been
making the most of the good waves and “warmer than usual” water at Gisborne
this winter.
“I am so excited for the upcoming season and this scholarship has added more
motivation for me” added Story.
Wano is currently overseas and was with his Mum, brothers and girlfriend when
they saw the email confirmation.
“The scholarship will help my surfing heaps, I’ll be able to buy better
equipment like boards and get some coaching” said Wano. “It will also boost my surfing for the up and
coming summer comps here in New Zealand. I am very grateful to the ISA and
everyone who helped me to obtain the scholarship” he added.

The two surfers were selected from five New Zealand applicants.
Formal letters from the International Surfing Association President Fernando
Augerre have already been sent to recipients congratulating them on their inclusion
in the programme.
“As a 2012 ISA Scholarship Recipient, you are an ISA Ambassador, and you
will forever represent the ISA in your country as a dedicated surfer and
student who strives and achieves success in and out of the water” said ISA
President Fernando Augerre.
“To be an ISA Ambassador is an extremely great honour, and your effort
in submitting a heartfelt and well-deserving application speaks to your
dedication to both your surfing and education” added Augerre of the two New
Zealand recipients.
Wano and Story each receive $1,000 USD to help them achieve their goals in
surfing and succeed at school.
New Zealand has had two other scholarship recipients in the past being Jayda
Martin – Fitzharris (Gis) in 2009 and Mahorahora McLeod (Tara) in 2010.
The ISA Scholarship Program has consistently grown since it first
started in 2007, due to the generous funding from The Quiksilver Foundation,
Billabong, Reef Redemption and Greenpacha Sold At Varoq.com, as well as the
continued support from ISA Member Organisations.
