New Zealand Team Finish Tenth At World Games

The Quiksilver New Zealand Surfing Team has finished tenth at the 2008 ISA World Surfing Games – two places high than the team finished in 2006 at the last event.  Daryn Mcbride (Mnt) placed ninth overall in the Longboard Division overnight (Saturday) as the last team member left in the event.  Maz Quinn (Gis), Zennor Wernham (Rag) and Luke Cederman (Rag) were eliminated from the Open Men’s Division overnight Friday.  Australia won the event for the third consecutive year followed by USA and Brazil.

The 2008 ISA World Surfing Games are being held at Costa Da Caparica, Portugal where small waves of 0.5-1.0m continue to greet competitors from the thirty nations attending.  The prestigious biennial event known as the Olympics of surfing takes place from the 11th – 19th of October.  From 2009 the event becomes an annual event on the surfing calendar.

Mcbride contested two heats on the penultimate day of the event and was eventually eliminated from the event by 2006 runner up Ben Skinner (UK) and Miguel Ruivo (POR) in Repercharge Round 4.  Mcbride placed third in his final heat scoring a total of 9.36 points (out of the possible 20).  Mcbride required a 4.52 point ride for progression and on his last wave scored 3.53 which was not enough to push him into second place for progression.

Quinn produced the best result of the three Open Men’s surfers but could not forge past Repercharge Round 6 where he placed third in his heat.  Charly Martin (FRA) and Klee Strachan (ZAF) got off to quick starts in the heat leaving Quinn to play catch up.  The small fickle conditions made this difficult for Quinn who finished with a total heat score of 10.16 (out of a possible 20).  Quinn required a 7.01 point ride for progression and the score ultimately proved insurmountable.  Quinn placed the highest of the Open Men’s team in 17th place.

Zennor Wernham started day six in good style winning his first heat in Repercharge Round 4 with a score of 12.47 points to outpoint surfers from Portugal, Japan and England.  Wernham then went on to be eliminated in Round 5 when he placed third to Charly Martin (FRA) and Fredrico Morias (POR).  Wernham was unable to find any waves that offered up enough scoring potential to threaten the heat leaders and finished with a heat total of 7.47 points requiring a 6.01 point ride for progression.  Wernham finished the event placed 25th which improved on his 41st placing in 2006.

Luke Cederman (Rag) was the first Open Men’s surfer of day six to fall victim to the small waves.  The big built surfer who is well known for his explosive forehand surfing on lefthanders could not replicate any of that form in the smaller right hand waves on his backhand.  In an inconsistent heat for waves, Cederman found himself trailing the top two surfers and in fact stood on the rocks of the breakwater.  Standing there, holding down priority, Cederman waited out the final five minutes of the heat with not one decent wave passing him by.  Cederman finished the heat in third place and finished the event in 33rd overall, the same placing he achieved in 2006.
