Over 170 school children got to “Have a Go” at the exciting sport of surfing last week when Surfing New Zealand brought their “Surfing 4 Schools” project to the Northland region.
Surfing New Zealand’s
Development Manager Lee Ryan was thrilled at how the project was delivered “We
couldn’t have asked for better waves and weather for the surfing lessons. It’s
a great opportunity to promote the sport of surfing and increase participation
in surfing at primary and intermediate school level” said Ryan. “We are thankful to receive Kiwi Sport funding
from Sport Northland to run this event and provide opportunities for Northland
youth to find out more about the sport of surfing and ultimately ride their
first wave.”
The “Have a Go
Surfing Days” targeting year 5, 6, 7 and
8 students were run at both Sandy Bay, Whangarei and Shipwreck Bay, Ahipara
from Thursday 6th October through to Sunday 9th October. Schools taking part included Ngunguru Primary,
Excellere College,
Tauraroa School,
Hikurangi Primary, Te Rangi Aniwaniwa, Kaingaroa Primary, Kaitaia Intermediate
and Ahipara School. All participants received expert
coaching from Surfing New Zealand qualified instructors, beach and surf safety
information, access to surfboards and wetsuits, a two hour supervised surfing
session, a Surfing New Zealand Junior Surfer Programme Logbook and a goodie bag
full of cool surfing gear.
The Surfing 4
Schools Have a Go Surfing Days in the Northland region were proudly sponsored
by SPARC, Sport Northland KiwiSport, NZ
Community Trust, Water Safety New Zealand, Hyundai Motors NZ, New Zealand
Surfing Magazine and Curl Magazine.
