This event will be held over Labour Weekend.
The Classic promises to be a star-studded event with top international surfers competing including former world champ Baden Smith (Aus) and his team of top Aussie Kneeboarders. Former World Junior and Pro Junior Kneeboarders, Kelvin Weir (if he makes it back from Canada in time), Hamish Christophers and Cameron Stanley will lead a strong, young Kiwi contingent.
At this years event the Trans Tasman Cup tag team trophy goes on the line. The trophy has been resident in NZ for the last decade and the Aussies are keen to get their hands on it. Also up for grabs will be the first ever Taranaki Kneeboard Surfing titles. A junior trial to select junior kneelos for the next world champs in Australia 2011 will be conducted in conjunction with the event.
In the women’s event Waitara’s Jo Moore, the reigning Worlds women’s champ will be the favourite over a field likely to include Opunakians juniors, Jordan Cooksley, ex Bex Heemi and Oakura’s Casey Stevens.
In the men’s open, besides the appearance of the Aussies, interest will be focussed on the return to form of National Champ Roydon Stewart who has been out of the water for 6 months due to a severe wrist injury.
The event will be held in the Opunake area over Saturday and Sunday of Labour week end and venue locations and updates can be heard over The Edge FM 94.0 and More FM 93.2 Taranaki.
