Only two Kiwi surfers remain in the qualifying rounds of the 2012 DaKine ISA World Junior Surfing Championship currently being held at Playa Venao, Panama after the third of eight days of competition took place overnight (Wednesday 18th April).
The Rip Curl New Zealand Junior Surfing Team battled hard on day three with
Elliot Paerata – Reid (Piha) and Ella Williams (WGM) remaining in the
qualifying rounds but seven of their team mates dropped back into the
repecharge rounds.
The
conditions on day three were a little slower than the first two with smaller 1.0m
waves and bigger lulls between the sets, particularly over the full tide. However the waves were still good when they
came with the biggest scores of the event being achieved by some surfers.
Elliot Paerata – Reid (Piha) surfed the closest
heat of the entire event in the third round eventually placing second to Japan’s
Takumi Nakamura.
Paerata – Reid got a buzzer-beating wave to equal up the scores with the
heat front runners and progress through to the final 16 surfers in the qualifying
rounds of the Under 16 Boys Division.
“I got
hassled hard at the beginning by the kid from Argentina and missed two good waves
then I got a 5.23 and needed like a 4.13 and was getting hassled so hard that I
paddled up the beach. I caught a wave
with 30 seconds remaining and got the 4.13 and progressed on a count back. I was so lucky” exclaimed Paerata – Reid who
admitted to riding a rollercoaster of emotions during the 20 minute heat.
He
finished with a 9.36 point heat total out of a possible 20 points, equal with
the Argentinean surfer Filipe Suarez.
However by way of his highest scoring ride of 5.23 point ride being
better than the Argintines (5.03), he progressed in second place behind Nakamura
who was 0.01 points ahead.
Ella Williams was the second surfer to survive the qualifying rounds blitzing
her heat with an 11.90 point heat score to beat her opponents from Japan, Mexico
and Brazil. Williams posted single wave scores of 6.0 and
5.90 to win the heat and move through to the final 24 surfers in that round.
Williams will next face off against Mauarii Maro (TAH), Ana Morau (FRA) and
Miluska Tello (PER) in her third round match up.
In another long day of surfing Paerata – Reid acknowledged how tough it was at
this time of the event when half of your team start losing heats but said that
the team has been great with everyone getting in behind each other and willing
everyone on to win.
And indeed, overall it was a tough day for the team with ten of the twelve
surfers now relegated to the repecharge rounds.
In the Under 18 Boys it was Tane Wallis (Piha) and Ben Poulter (Rag) that went
down in their second round heats. They
were followed closely by Mackenzie Christie (Mnt) in the third round who initially
got a good start to his heat but fell on a crucial wave that would have seen
him in a strong position to move through to the final 16 surfers in the Under
18 Boys Division. Christie finished his
heat in third place behind surfers from USA
and France.
In the Under 18 Girls Division both Jayda Martin – Fitzharris (Gis) and Jasmine
Smith (Gis) failed to move past the second round placing third and fourth
respectively in their heats. They now
join Alethea Lock (Chch) in the repecharge rounds which are likely to be
contested over the next two days.
Harrison Whiteside (Chch) bowed out of Qualifying Round 2 while Jordan Griffin
(Mnt) put up a good fight to move through to the third round of the Under 16
Boys before he too was ousted into the repecharge rounds.
The swell is expected to decrease slightly for day
four of action. Please see below for New Zealand
results from Day three of the 2012 DaKine ISA World Junior Surfing Championship
