Perfect surf conditions at Whaingaroa’s Ruapuke Beach created a fitting finale to the third event of the Auahi Kore Maori Tri Series over the weekend. Clean 0.5m – 1.0m waves broke throughout the tides and it was Raglan local Chris Malone (formerly of Gisborne, Te Aitanga Mahaki) who took out the Billabong open Men’s final with perhaps the most dominating display of surfing the three event series has seen. Along with Malone winning the men’s division, a further four event champions were crowned as well as the overall team champions. The inaugural Auahi Kore Maori Tri Series was developed in partnership with Te Puni Kokiri, the aim being to develop Maori surfers and bring whanau together around a sporting event.
In the final Malone amassed 18.50 out a possible 20 points scoring individual rides of 9.5 and 9.0. The right hander that broke all day and throughout the tides had ceased to break by finals time late in the afternoon. In its place formed a fast and hollow lefthander that was held in shape by offshore winds – an excellent combination for high performance surfing.
In a twist for the open men’s division, local female Jessica Santorik had opted to surf amongst the boys to see how she would go. Progressing through her first heat all eyes were on her stacked semifinal. A few big turns later and Santorik found herself moving through to the final in place of the winner of the second event Kahn Butler (Ngati Awa/Ngai Te Rangi). Santorik was unable to match the big vertical forehand turns of Malone in the final and ultimately had to settle for third place behind the fast improving Brooke Elliot (Te Arawa).

Elliot placed third in the second event of the Auahi Kore Maori Tri Series when it was held in his backyard (Matakana Island). This time around he looked to be another surfer whose fortunes improved when the lefthander formed late in the day enabling him to race the waves on his forehand. Despite getting a couple of super fast peeling waves Elliot was still left requiring a combination of scores to catch Malone after scoring 9.77 to third placed Santorik’s 8.8 point heat total.
The Billabong junior men’s division saw another local come to life in Haami Martin. Martin who lives in Raglan and attends the Raglan Surfing Academy showed a clean pair of heels in the final completing big powerful backhand turns to post 16.0 points out of a possible 20 for an easy victory. This was the first event of the series that Martin had attended forgoing his Saturday commitments to rugby to be at the event.
At the end of the week Martin heads off to Tahiti to compete in the Oceania Cup along with nine Maori team mates. Travelling with him will be junior men’s runner up James Tume. Tume travelled to the event from Wellington and his performance over the weekend was highlighted by some big turns and a few big wipe outs as the slight framed youngster battled with the stiff offshore winds. Sitting in close behind Tume was third placed Ryan Elliot and another Raglan local in Wiremu Tonga who finished fourth.

The Over 35 men’s division was as hotly contested as ever with age showing no barrier to competitiveness. The top of the table tussle was again featured Doug Te Ranga and Ronnie Mayor (both of Ngai Te Rangi) as they traded down the line speed turns and the odd barrel. This time it was Te Ranga who got to equal the score winning the final over Mayor. Reece Horne (Ngati Awa) completed some big power moves to finish third ahead of team mate and winner of the second event Lance Yeager (Te Arawa).
In the Hyundai longboard division Martin Matenga (Tainui) stole the final in the dying stages after all the surfers were locked up in a low scoring affair. Matenga managed to sneak ahead of Douglas Te Ranga in second with Issac Johnston (Nga Puhi) in third and double finalist Reece Horne in fourth.
The under 12 boys put on another great display of surfing earlier in the day. The Young guys from Tauranga Moana were bolstered with a couple of Whaingaroa’s finest and they put on a great spectacle. It was Max Yeager (Te Arawa) who triumphed this time around after he latched on to some long, overhead righthanders. Local boy Tangaroa Rawiri put it all on the line and showed his strength to finish second in his first ever surfing event. Kaya Horne (Ngati Awa) finished in third place with the sole female Monique Redman in fourth and Tama Yeager (Te Arawa) in fifth.
At the crack of dawn all entrants and workers awoke at the Poihakena Marae for breakfast, introductions and a briefing. In a convoy of some twenty cars everyone travelled around the dirt roads behind Mount Karioi to Ruapuke Beach. As well as the competitive side of the event everyone enjoyed catching up, hanging out at the beach and playing all kinds of sports embracing the Kotahitanga (being as one). The Kereopa brothers Daniel and Aaron attended the event and put on a spectacle as they rode their stand up paddle boards in and around the competition area.
Final results from the final event of the Auahi Kore Maori Tri Series held at Ruapuke Beach, Raglan on the 21st of June are as follows:
