Power Station delivers for Northland Scholastics Finale
Written by Tony Baker
Monday, 28 June 2010

The third and final event of the 2010 Northland Scholastics Surfing Series was held in pristine 1.5-2m waves at "The Power Station" in Ruakaka. After a stormy night on the Mangawhai coast , contest organisers decided the 3-4m swell on offer at Mangawhai Heads was far from ideal and the event was relocated to The Powerstation in Ruakaka. Contestants were greeted by solid head high plus waves with perfect offshores and amazing banks.

In the Bodyboard Division it was brothers Regan and Dayne Williams (WGBH) who battled it out in the fun waves on offer. Both boys surfed some good long rides, but it was Dayne who took the win.

In the Under 14 Division local surfer Mathew Jensen ( Bream Bay College ) showed good local knowledge in his early heats. Flynn Cribb ( Kaitaia College ) continued his good form making it into the finals. Joe Palmer ( Kerikeri High School) picked off some of the more solid waves on offer, but it was Matt McGregor ( Kamo High School ) who dominated the punchy conditions taking out his age division.

The Under 16 Boys division really showcased the up and coming talent in Northland surfing ranks with Jack Tracey ( WGBH) and Fraser Seymour ( WGBH) both scoring some good, high scoring waves in the final. But it was the continued dominance of Sandy Bay’s Paxti  Scott-Arietta (Kamo High Scvhool) who took out the division. Scott-Arietta smashed every wave that came his way and will be a sure bet for the 2010 Northland Team.

The Under 18 Division made up for what it lacked in numbers ( only 3 surfers) by all surfers putting on a  powerful display of surfing. Alex Seymour (WGBH) picked off some long left handers  in the final surfing them with style. Darcy Bowden (Kamo High School ) shredded a couple of punchy rights to the beach but it was Louie Smith ( Rodney College ) taking out the final with his blend of fast, fluid forehand surfing and loose back hand re-entries.

See below the results for the event:

Bodyboarding 1st Dayne William (WGBH) 2nd Regan Williams (WGBH)
U14 Boys 1st Matt McGregor  (Kamo) 2nd Joe Palmer(Kerikeri) 3rd Flynn Cribb (Kaitaia)  4th Matt Jenson (Bream Bay)
U16 Boys 1st Patxi Scott-Arietta (Kamo) 2nd Fraser Seymour 3rd Jack Tracey (WGBH) 4th  Ari Tidyman (Rodney)
U18 Boys 1st Louis Smith (Rodney) 2nd Darcy Bowden (Kamo) 3rd  Alex Seymour (WGBH)

This was the final event of a Series of 3 events held across Northland.  Full results and overall ratings for the Series will be released shortly with the Northland Team being selected by the middle of July 2010.

Thanks must go to the Mangawhai Board Riders for hosting the event, all the judges and helpers on the day for thier hardwork and commitment, the parents for dropping the groms off at the beach, and ofcourse, to all the competitors. 2010 has been a fantastic year for Scholastic Surfing in Northland.

Bring on the National Scholastics in Gisborne in October.
