Premier ISA World Bodyboarding Championship to Take Place in the Canary Islands this December
Written by ISA
Tuesday, 19 July 2011

The International Surfing Association is proud to announce the first edition of the ISA World Bodyboarding Championship. The event is confirmed to take place at the waves of El Frontón and la Guancha (Galdar City) in the Canary Islands, Spain from November 30 until December 4, 2011.

The ISA World Bodyboarding Championship was conceived to give all the bodyboarders in the world their own event to demonstrate their excellence. After two years of evaluating venues, the Executive Committee of the ISA decided that the "European Hawaii" was the right place to make this happen.

"We're proud to launch this new ISA signature event," said ISA President, Fernando Aguerre. "Just like in 2003 when the ISA launched our Juniors-only event and it was a huge success, we're confident the WBC will have a great turnout. We are excited to go back to Europe to host a World Championship event."

Lorenço Chaves, Executive Director of the Spanish Surfing Federation, was thrilled to be chosen as the event's organizer.

"This is a dream come true," said Chaves. "This event is made possible by the support of the City of Galdar, the Directorate of General Sports Canarias, the Consejo Superior de Deportes, Turismo de Canarias and Cabildo de Las Palmas. We know that it will mark a "before and after" in the history of bodyboarding."

Chaves continues, "The Canaries Islands are the bodyboarding hub. There are more bodyboarders per square meter here than anywhere else in the world. Locals are stoked about this competition, which will feature the best bodyboarding in the world."

Considered the European Hawaii, Canary Islands have world-class waves, constant temperature throughout the year (between 20ºC and 32ºC) and warm water. Galdar City generates some of the best waves in the world for bodyboarding. It has abundant, good accomodations and very welcoming people.
