The Auckland Region Scholastics Surfing Champs scored easterly off shores and a
3ft long period swell at Maori
Bay on Sunday (3rd
July).
A chill in the air greeted a great turn out of frothing groms with the first
heat hitting the water at 8am.
Being such a big event, and there being two distinct banks at both Shags and
Middles, a good call was made to set up two podiums. The polished team of
officials ploughed through the heats with some great surfing at all levels with
the expected the U18 and U16 boys being fiercely contested. Of course not to be outdone, the younger
contestants relished in the clean conditions without the fear of disappearing
to Aussie in a notorious West Coast rip.
There were many standouts with all competitors participating with enthusiasm
organisers were proud of.
Special thanks to Amazon for the awesome prize packs, Gavin and Kiwisurf, Maori
Bay Boardriders Club and all the parents and teachers who volunteered their
time and baked some mean grub for the event.
Another great team effort and an awesome bunch of keen kids.
The third and final event scheduled for the 28th August is mobile (West or East)
